Air NZ releases safety video: outrage simmers down

Air New Zealand has officially unveiled its latest in-flight safety video, which was filmed by Josh Frizzel from 8com and features five models from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit franchise.

Like all previous safety videos commissioned by the airline, this one can also be viewed on Youtube. One key difference, however, is that the comments have been disabled, probably due to the controversy surrounding the release of the behind-the-scenes clip.

Last week, when it was announced that Chrissy Teigen, Ariel Meredith, Hannah Davis, Jessica Gomes and Christie Brinkley would appear in the new in-flight safety video, both Stuff and the Herald released articles that were critical of the decision to sexualise in-flight videos.

The initial response on Twitter and Facebook was largely negative, with some accusing the airline of stepping precariously close to chauvinism with this new approach.

Given that the initial comments were made in response to the behind-the-scenes video, it was always going to be interesting to see what the online community would say once the full video was released.

Somewhat surprisingly, most of the feedback since the release of the video has taken a positive turn, with men and women both saying that they enjoyed it.

In addition to providing safety information for those aboard an Air New Zealand flight, the new video also doubles as an advertisement for the Cook Islands. The combination of beautiful beaches and rich Pacific culture will undoubtedly appeal to those who are considering a trip in the near future.
