More new blood at Y&R

Nicky Greville has joined Y&R Auckland in the newly created position of general manager, media.

She will lead all things media together with Catherine Hamilton (national trading director) and Grant Maxwell (general manager, Wellington).

Greville is currently strategy director at SparkPHD, where she has been since 2008. Prior to that she spent time in the UK at Mindshare and Starcom Mediavest and she has been involved in a number of award-winning campaigns, including CAANZ Media Awards for Unilever and New Zealand Lotteries.

“I’m really excited to join a fully integrated team that has such a strong shared vision for creating amazing work grounded in great strategic thinking,” she says. “I’ve been watching Y&R pull in some great new clients like Westfield and The Cooperative Bank and their integrated model seems to be really delivering so I can’t wait to join the team.”

The appointment follows the resignation of media strategy director Kelly Beange, who is moving on to “pursue other opportunities”.

“I want to acknowledge the contribution Kelly has made to the agency since she’s been with us [she joined MEC in 2008],” says managing director James Hurman. “Kelly’s knowledge and empathy with clients has been a real asset.”

When asked where Beange is heading, executive creative director Josh Moore said: “Not sure what her plans are.”

This senior appointment follows a number of others, including, most recently, the arrival of Abbe Hale as general manager.

Another scalp for TRN

The Radio Network’s Newstalk ZB has signed TV3 senior broadcast journalist Rachel Smalley to host a new breakfast programme called Early Edition, which will air between 5-6am, leading into the top-rating Mike Hosking Breakfast.

“Early Edition will be a premium show for Newstalk ZB,” says Dallas Gurney, general manager of talk programming for The Radio Network. “Peoples’ work patterns are changing requiring them to be up earlier than a few years ago. This show is designed to give them all the information they need to start the day.”

Gurney says early breakfast shows are trending internationally.

“There are now are as many people listening to Newstalk ZB at 5:30 in the morning as at 4:30 in the afternoon, this programme will better serve the needs of the early morning information seeker.”

He expects the show to also be popular with the farming community.

Smalley, one of the country’s top interviewers, is the current host of TV3’s early morning week day news programme Firstline and in-depth live current affairs and political debate programme on Saturday morning The Nation. She originally began her journalism career with TRN.

According to the Herald, a source says Smalley will continue her role with The Nation, “which screens on TV3 but is made by an independent production company”.

This appointment follows on from The Radio Network’s snaffling of MediaWorks’ radio duo Carl Fletcher and Vaughan Smith.

A rare expansion

Speaking of MediaWorks, it certainly hasn’t had too much expansion to crow about in recent years, but there’s been some in the TV publicity department.

The changes are primarily at the senior level, with former publicity manager Rachel Lorimer accepting the newly created role of group communications manager – corporate & news and current affairs. This role allows her to focus on being the company spokesperson and first port of call for all corporate communications enquiries across the MediaWorks TV, radio and online divisions, as well as having more capacity to work on news and current affairs publicity.

Senior publicist Megan Stuart has been seconded fulltime to The Block NZ for the medium term. She will also work across the wider TV3 and Four schedules and will continue to cover corporate communications when Lorimer is on leave.

Jacqui Loates-Haver has joined as senior publicist – entertainment for six months, working on general programming across TV3 and Four. She was a former publicity manager for MediaWorks TV.

Jeane Mowatt has also joined recently as publicist working on TV3 and Four general programming and she comes direct from the music industry.

Chris Henry, senior publicist for The X Factor NZ, finishes with TV3 on 16 August, and is heading overseas for an extended holiday. And senior publicist Polly Viccars recently left MediaWorks

Added volume for Volom

Volom, a provider of outsourced marketing resources to the SME sector, has appointed senior marketing professional Brian Scott.

“Brian’s appointment comes at an exciting time for the group,” says Volom founder Paul Wilkes. “We’re continuing to see growing recognition and take-up for our marketing services, which make real and effective marketing campaigns a reality for businesses that may previously have viewed a marketing department as out of their reach.”

Scott has over 20 years’ experience in blue chip organisations both locally and internationally. He has spent a number of years with Castrol and was most recently at St John in senior marketing and strategic development roles.

“I’m excited at the prospect of helping enthusiastic and entrepreneurial Kiwis to grow their businesses and their brands with strategic thinking, good planning and customer-focused marketing programmes,” he says. “The unique Volom approach allows these clients to access top notch creative and marketing services, in ways they may not be able to do alone. I’m looking forward to helping make this happen.”

She’s in fashion

Pead PR has appointed Amy Louise Bailey to the role of account manager on its lifestyle team.

Deborah Pead says Bailey brings to the agency excellent PR and event management skills developed on a wide range of luxury and lifestyle brands and for fashion, beauty and corporate clients.

She has valuable experience in the digital arena and print media and has also worked in fashion retail and research.

And she has a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in marketing and management from the University of Auckland as well as a B.A. in communications and film and media (Otago).
