New executive director

The Magazine Publishers Association NZ has announced the appointment of Sally Duggan as executive director, who takes over the role following Pip Elliott’s departure in December.

Duggan has more than three decades experience in the magazine industry having worked as both editor and publisher of a number of titles and digital media. Her most recent editor position was as editor on NZ House & Garden.

Working with administration and communications manager Jessica Malcolm, Duggan’s role will be to bring MPA’s mission to life, celebrating the inspiration and effectiveness of magazines, and showcasing the industry’s rich variety of beyond-the-page innovations in mobile, events, online and video.

MPA chairman James Frankham says Duggan is the perfect fit for the role, given the current landscape of change in the magazine industry.

“As a hands-on senior creative, Sally understands these changes and opportunities better than most. And as a former board member of the MPA, she has a unique appreciation of the inner workings of both the organisation and the concerns of publishers.”

Duggan says her time in the industry has given her huge respect for the ability of magazines to build connections and community with readers – as well as insight into the challenges publishers currently face.

“The Magazine Publishers Association has never been more important, and I’m excited to play a part in driving its future direction.”

Co-leadership appointments

Recruitment agency 3rdeye has appointed two former recruitment consultants to the co-leadership role of the media team. Harriet Kelly and Ellana Stubbs will jointly take over the leadership responsibilities of the longstanding media specialist, Barry Williamson, who is set to step down from his consultancy role.

3rdeye director Andy Sive says while the departure of Williamson will be a loss, Kelly and Stubbs are more than capable.

“Barry joined us to strengthen the media recruitment side of our business and has done an outstanding job. We will miss him, and wish him well in his next endeavour.

“This is an exciting new chapter for 3rdeye. Not only will Harriet and Ellana be able to continue the excellent work they have done with 3rdeye in the past few years, but this change will dovetail nicely into other developments that we will see this coming year. More shall be revealed soon!”

Kelly joined 3rdeye in 2015 after many years of media planning and buying in both New Zealand and London; and has a wealth of experience across all media channels, including digital.

Stubbs joined 3rdeye in 2016 after over ten years of media planning, buying and social media experience, working on a wide range of clients and integrated media strategies.

New ANZ CFO

Dentsu Aegis Network (DAN) has appointed Anthea Kane as the chief financial officer of Australia and New Zealand.

Kane joins DAN from ANZ Banking Group where she has held multiple roles across more than 17 years, most recently as CFO Global Technology, Services and Operations – a division of the bank spanning 33 countries with more than 20,000 people.

She has also previously worked with several global businesses including Shell, Coopers & Lybrad and KPMG.

As a strategic partner to the incoming DAN Australia/New Zealand chief executive officer Henry Tajer, Kane will play a key role in executing and delivering on the group’s strategic, commercial, operational and financial objectives, as well as contributing to the organisation’s regional and global finance functions.

Kane will be supported by Jeff Askew, who has been promoted to the newly created role of deputy CFO after a period in the role of interim CFO.

DAN HR director Luke Speers says the appointment is a natural fit.

“Anthea is known for her strong stakeholder management, team engagement, and commitment to delivering real business value through transformation. I believe she is well positioned to lead Dentsu Aegis Network into an exciting next phase of growth.”

Kane says she is pleased to be joining the network.

“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to work in such a well-respected, innovative and diverse organisation, and to partner with an exceptional leadership team to drive the strong performance of the business.”

Kane will be based out of DAN’s Melbourne office from today.
