New group business director

FCB has confirmed the appointment of Hannah McLean as group business director.

McLean has been promoted from her most recent role of senior account director and has been with FCB for eight years. During this time she has worked on some of FCB's most significant accounts, including the Health Promotion Agency, Prime Television, Keep New Zealand Beautiful, Inland Revenue and VTNZ.

FCB head of account management Jane Wardlaw says McLean has long been leading business and getting great work through the agency. 

"The success of the campaigns that she has worked on are a testament to her passion and professionalism. An excellent recent example being VTNZ's brand work."

As well as leading key clients, McLean has been involved in numerous new business projects, and produced highly popular and creatively awarded work.

McLean says she has always loved being part of the team. 

"I have been given the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients, from heavy retail to brand. I'm really looking forward to stepping up to this new challenge and being part of FCB's exiciting future."

Females in film

Eight has signed Kate Halpin for representation in Australia, New Zealand and Asia – an appointment which also brings Eight's female director tally to one third of the roster. 

Halpin has worked as a director and writer in Sydney for many years and has directed television commercials both in Australia and abroad for brands such as Hyundai, Uber, P&O Cruises, FIFA World Cup, NSW Health, Heritage Bank and Eye Love. 

She is a graduate of the International Film School Sydney, where she completed an Advanced Diploma in Screen and Media – specialising in directing, screenwriting and producing.

Her music video 'Sympathy' by Iluka won Best Australian Music Video at the Clipped Music Video Festival in 2018. 

Haplin says she's excited about this new step.

"I feel very fortunate to be able to work as a director in this industry, but I'm very aware that you're only ever as good as the team you surround yourself with, so I feel very confident to be joining the group fo pros and down-to-earth legends at Eight."

Eight managing director and executive producer Katie Millington says she is inspired by Halpin's talent.

"As soon as I saw her work I knew we had to have her."

A trio of appointments

Graeme Mustard

Wellington-based Eighty One has appointed three new staff members recently, as the team continues to grow. 

Graeme Mustard has joined the team as senior digital designer, having previously worked as a user-experience digital designer at Satellite in Auckland. Mustard's has previously worked in design roles around New Zealand and in the United Kingdom. 

Illustrator and budding animation director Jay Hall has also joined Eighty One – he most recently worked at the Cartoon Network in Singapore. 

Nat Sanders also joins the team from a stint at ANZ in Australia.

New venture

Special Group creative direct Angus Hennah is leaving the agency after three years to start the Ampersand Collective. The creative collective will draw on proven relationships with experienced entrepreneurial thinkers across Australia and New Zealand. 

Special Group managing director Michael Redwood says the team were supportive of Hennah's decision to leave to start his own venture. 

"We fully intend that Special will be Angus's new business's foundation client, which will enable smooth continuity for brands where he has played a leading role creatively."

Hennah says he's looking forward to the new challenge, and is glad he can continue his relationship with Special. 

"I very much look forward to meeting new clients, colleagues and friends to help solve their particular business problems. 

Combined Australian and New Zealand operations

Steve O'Connor

JCDecaux Australia and New Zealand have announced the new leadership team for the combined JCDecaux and APN Outdoor businesses.

It will be business as usual for the two companies during the integration planning phase, which will be implemented in the new year. Steve O'Connor, who was announced the new chief executive in October, says "I am confident that we have the right combination of talent, skills and experience in our new leadership team who will now work together to create a market leading out-of-home company in Australia and New Zealand".

Chief operating officer: Andrew Hines, who is currently COO at APN Outdoor where he has spent 16 years. He has also worked at Cody Outdoor as finance and commercial director for nine years.

Chief financial officer: Brendan O’Neil, who joined JCDecaux in 1998, when the company entered the Australian market, and has been CFO ever since.

Chief commercial officer: Max Eburne, who will have a focus on all advertiser and agency revenue. Currently in the same role at JCDecaux, Eburne was promoted from general manager, sales and marketing to CCO in 2016. He joined JCDecaux as an associate director in the UK in 2006, before moving to JCDecaux Australia in 2009.

Chief strategy and innovation officer: Jeremy Howe, who is currently chief strategy and innovation officer at APN. Prior to joining APN, Howe spent 14 years with Telstra, most recently as director, product innovation.

Chief marketing officer: Essie Wake, who is currently CMO at JCDecaux. Wake, who joined JCDecaux in 2011, was previously marketing drector. She has a 19-year career in the media industry, and prior to joining JCDecaux was research and strategy director with Initiative.

NZ country head: Mike Watkins, who is currently in the same role at APN. Prior to joining APN two years ago he was head of social and head of culture at Ogilvy. Watkins also founded Post Creative Group, and has worked as managing partner of DDB and general manager of M&C Saatchi. 

Financial appointment

Allan Wong Kam will be joining the Loyalty NZ executive team next month as chief financial officer. His first day in the role will be 10 December.

Loyalty NZ chief executive Lizzy Ryley says Kam is the perfect fit. 

"Allan will be a great addition to the team and we look forward to having someone with his skills on board as we continue to add value to our clients and their customers." 

Kam has spent the last six years at Lumino The Dentists where he started as chief financial officer, managing the finance and IT functions before becoming general manager commercial ANZ. There he led the commercial analytics, procurement, property and finance business partnering function for the group. He was also responsible for budgets, forecasting and business case evaluation. 

A chartered accountant with more than 25 years' experience, he has held senior commercial management roles for Restaurant Brands and Baxter Healthcare.

Whittaker's divides the court of public opinion – but all for a good cause

On Monday, Whittaker’s launched its latest novelty chocolate-lolly mash up with a chocolatey answer to retro bakesale treat coconut ice. The Coconut Ice Surprise chocolate has a twist though, 20c from each block goes to Plunket – a charity which New Zealanders agree is a worthy cause. However, to relate the chocolate to the charity, Whittaker's has built the campaign around baby gender reveal parties, causing a backlash from the public who argue gender norms have expanded beyond blue for boys and pink for girls.
