Movings / Shakings: 15 September

Leading lady

Rebecca Kamm has joined the Vice team as the Australia and New Zealand editor for Broadly, Vice’s eleventh channel that celebrates a diverse range of topics and issues that matter most to women today.

Kamm most recently worked as a writer and producer at The Wireless, with a particular focus on gender and health. She has also edited NO Magazine and Sunday Magazine, and been a feminist columnist for the NZ Herald’s blog.

In the release, she said too many women’s stories fly under the radar and she is excited to convey and represent the Australasian female experience in all its multiplicity.

“Broadly is about thorough and original reporting; whether it’s text or video, we’ll be documenting and investigating, not adding to the glut of think pieces already out there. Opinion obviously has huge value, but women are already more than catered for in that area. This is something different.”

Taking the lead

MediaWorks has announced the appointment of Shaun Davies as Newshub’s head of digital news.

Stepping into the role on 19 September, Davies will manage the strategy and editorial direction for Newshub’s digital properties, including the app, digital sites, social channels and other platforms. He will also oversee a team of producers, editors and video experts.

Davies brings with him more than 15 years’ experience as a journalist, most recently as the Australian editor for BBC News. Prior to this, he held roles at NineMSN and News Limited as well as Microsoft, where he worked as an editorial lead and PR consultant in Japan.

Chief news officer Hal Crawford called Davies “one of the most talented journalists he has worked with” and commended him for understanding the needs of his audience.

“His experience across a range of digital roles and global news services means he is well suited to continue driving the strong growth Newshub has shown in the digital space since launch.

“The on-going evolution of Newshub’s digital offering is a key area of focus for us. Shaun is an innovator and leader – and knows how to stay close to the audience while following his own ideas of newsworthiness.”

Stepping up

Marketing software company Marketo has announced the appointment of Bill Binch as the new ANZ managing director.

Binch, who takes on responsibility for overall business operations across the region, previously served as senior vice president Worldwide SMB Sales. There he was instrumental in building Marketo into one of the fastest growing enterprise software companies in the world.

During Binch’s tenure, Marketo’s customer base grew from 27 in 2008 to more than 4,000 in 2016. His new role will assist in expanding the company’s regional presence across both sales and marketing.

About his new role, Binch said in the release: “Stepping into the role of MD is an exciting opportunity for me to use my years of experience with Marketo to build on this already-solid foundation and enhance our offering for new and existing customers in the region”

Chief operating officer Jason Holmes said he is proud to welcome Binch to the role.

“Bill’s leadership and expertise will assist in taking our ANZ business to the next level, both by driving sales and ensuring that our new and existing customers are successful. Having been a part of Marketo in its early days, Bill embodies Marketo’s core values and dedication to innovation and excellence.”

Getting a boost

Kantar New Zealand has appointed Dr Will Koning to the role of chief data officer.

Kantar New Zealand is the parent company of Colmar Brunton and TNS, and Koning has been brought in to turn numbers into real value for clients.

CEO of Kantar New Zealand Jason Shoebridge said Koning’s big data capability will add a new dimension to Colmar Brunton and TNS’s experience and expertise in market research.

Koning returns to New Zealand from London to take on the role, after previously delivering industry-leading, data-driven strategy and solutions with his team at Kantar Media.

In the release, he said: “My task is to bring together Colmar Brunton and TNS’s expertise and experience as well as their access to proprietary datasets in addition to client’s own datasets.

“The two companies will then be uniquely positioned to bring the “what” and the “why” together to provide to provide maximum insights and reveal future opportunities for clients.”

New Zealand online lifestyle magazine for the 50+ demographic GrownUps has added three new faces to its team.

Aisling Wait joins as sales and website coordinator, having worked for the past seven years in publishing and media with Fairfax.

Brook Sparks joins from TVNZ to be senior sales executive, specialising in agency sales.

And Fleur Jenneson is stepping into the role as marketing specialist, having worked in marketing strategy for brands such as Cardrona Hotel, Skyline Queenstown and also for Christchurch agency, Strategy.

These three appointments mark an important step for the online publication, as it looks to scale up the reach of its content.

GrownUps has been published over the last decade, and the company’s founder Rich Poole says it provides a valuable source of information to a demographic group that sits at the centre of New Zealand.

These individuals are important decision makers, not only in terms of their own consumption, but also for their parents (often at retirement age) and their children (at school and at universities). He says that reaching this group offers a valuable opportunity for brands looking to reach other key demographics.

Polkinghorne will lead KPEX’s sales team and will focuse on delivering the best possible programmatic solutions for advertisers and agencies alike.

“I’m really excited to join the KPEX team,” says Polkinghorne. “The opportunity to work with such a premium group of publisher partners, drive the continued innovation in NZ’s programmatic marketplace and, most importantly, help deliver outstanding business results for out clients is a dream role for me, and I can’t wait to get stuck in”

Polkinghorne joins a growing team at KPEX after a successful first 10 months since launching.

KPEX chief executive officer Richard Thompson says: “Having Rogan joining the team here at KPEX is a fantastic result for us, his reputation in the market is first class, he’s one of the most experienced operators in programmatic and there is no doubt he will help drive KPEX to bigger and better things.”
