The Pixel Awards set to light up creativity

The country’s creatives, agencies and clients are set to benefit with the announcement of The Pixels, an initiative from Lumo to inspire digital out-of-home creativity.

The country’s creatives, agencies and clients are set to benefit with the announcement of The Pixels, an initiative from Lumo to inspire digital out-of-home creativity.

“We want the creative industry to understand the incredible potential of our screens, to encourage more creative thinking that utilises the technology’s capabilities,” says Phil Clemas, CEO of Lumo. “By inspiring the country’s creative departments, we believe we can move the outdoor category forward and help brands really take advantage of our digital possibilities.”

The inaugural winner of the awards will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two to SXSW in March 2020, valued at over $15,000 as well as free media placement for the winning work.

“Clients will also benefit commercially from The Pixels,” adds Kent Harrison, Executive Vice President, Lumo. “The inaugural winner will receive over $30,000 in media placement as well as bragging rights amongst their peers.”

Lumo have announced today the first three judges and appointed a convenor of the judges. Damon Stapleton, Lisa Fedyszyn, Steve Cochran and James Polhill will helm the inaugural awards.

“We’ve watched the boys build an incredible business and now we want to collectively raise the creative standard of the work,” says Damon Stapleton, Regional Chief Creative Officer, DDB New Zealand. “It’s important creative leaders allow time to produce great work with a blank canvas on their digital billboards.”

“Very few agencies and clients are aware of the true capabilities of their screens,” says Lisa Fedyszyn, Executive Creative Director, Stanley St. “We’ll be looking for simple, effective ideas that cut-through on screen, leverage their incredible technology and connect with audiences.”

“Much like Ogilvy and British Airways inspired minds with The Magic of Flying, we’re challenging the creative industry to show the world what we can do from our own backyard” says James Polhill, Managing Director, Hello. “It’s a privilege to work closely with Damon, Lisa and Steve to champion great work on their screens.”

The awards are now open for entries at and submissions close Thursday 31 October.

Meet the judges

Damon Stapleton

Damon is Regional Chief Creative Officer of DDB New Zealand. He was formerly ECD of Saatchi & Saatchi Australia and TBWA Hunt Lascaris. He’s worked on global brands such as BMW, Toyota, Nissan, Heineken, Visa, Cadbury and the World Cup 2010 campaign for Adidas. Damon has collected over 500 awards at the most prestigious international advertising festival shows including over 60 Cannes Lions as well as almost 50 D&AD Pencils. He is most known for his ‘Trillion Dollar’ bill campaign for The Zimbabwean and Penny the Pirate for OPSM. He’s had a variety of short stories published as well as articles for various magazines and writes a blog called which currently has over 100,000 followers. It’s stuff he thinks about instead of world domination.

Lisa Fedyszyn

Lisa is Executive Creative Director of Stanley St. Australia, New Zealand, USA, New Zealand. No matter where she goes, Lisa’s student loan still waits for her. So, she keeps working, from BBDO to DDB to TBWA to Droga5 to Ogilvy and now Stanley St, New Zealand’s biggest independent agency.

Since her time in the business, she’s made the most successful and entertaining recruitment film for the NZ Police, that has seen the largest intake of female and diverse recruits ever. She found a stunt that was even too dangerous for stuntwoman Zoe Bell to perform, for Auckland transport. Has humiliated one of Australia's most celebrated sportsmen for McDonald's, and once squeezed 60 scenes into a 60 second film for SKY. Along the way, her work has won awards at Effies, Cannes, D&AD, One Show, Clio, Webbys, and two Best In Shows at Axis. She was also named in Young Guns Top 10 Creatives of the Decade. She has judged at Cannes, Clio, New York Festivals, London Internationals, Axis, and AWARD. And for two years she was National Head of AWARD School in New Zealand, which prepared her for nurturing talent.

Steve Cochran

Steve is Executive Creative Director at Colenso BBDO. The agency where he’s stubbornly remained for 23 years. Yes, that’s 23. Long enough to claim an ECD title. Over those years he’s created many of Colenso’s most well-recognised campaigns and helped establish the agency’s global reputation. His work not only spans decades but almost every category you can name. But ask him which is his favourite piece, and he’ll answer that he’s aiming for it to be the one he’s working on right now.

James Polhill

James is the Managing Director at Hello. He’s spent over twenty years working with a range of the country’s largest blue-chip clients, as well as helping establish and grow a number of clever start-ups and boutique companies. He has a passion to transform businesses with ideas and believes creativity remains a game-changer for brands, now and in the future. His previous agencies include Droga5, Saatchi & Saatchi, FCB and Singleton, Ogilvy & Mather.
