TVNZ launches OnDemand iPhone and iPad app (finally!)

It’s been more than a year in the making, but TVNZ has finally launched its OnDemand app for iOS, meaning Shortland Street and Seven Sharp is now viewable across iPhone and iPad.

The app is relatively simple, featuring an image-centric catalogue with filtering by show name, genre, and time. A catch up calendar keeps users up to date about what shows are on, and when the next episode will be available for on demand consumption.

Adaptive streaming plays different quality versions of shows depending on whether the user is on 3G or viewing over wifi, and a specific bitrate is available for Retina devices which have a higher pixel density than standard displays.

StopPress spotted the app in the wild earlier this month at Telecom’s 4G trial launch event. We noted at the time there were emirate ad positions for major sponsors, with the first brand on board being ANZ. In addition to pre-roll ads and banner placements, it seems there is the capability to have customisation through video and other interactive content which can then be shared on social media.

UPDATE: Twitterer Kris Bainbridge points out that the app currently doesn’t work over Air Play due to digital rights management issues, meaning you can’t hook it up to your TV via an Apple TV.

A hopeful TVNZ does say it “hopes to be able to at some point in the future.”
