TRN dangles an impressive musical carrot to up iHeartRadio numbers

The Radio Network's digital offering iHeartRadio was in gestation for slightly longer than anticipated, but it's out and it's proud and, in an effort to get more New Zealanders signed up to the streaming service, it's putting on a free concert starring the current apple of the Kiwi music industry's eye, Lorde.

“iHeartRadio will be available for free on mobile and web to all New Zealanders in September so what better way to celebrate the full launch than by providing an opportunity for several thousand of those people that have registered for iHeartRadio to see Lorde live and for free," says TRN chief executive Jane Hastings.

The mysterious Lorde has only performed intimate shows in New Zealand, of which all three sold out in minutes, and the iHeartRadio concert will be the only chance New Zealanders will have to see Lorde in concert at home this year. She has been performing in the US recently, and is earning plenty of fans. Her single Royals also went to the top of the alternative charts in the US, the first time in 17 years a woman has worn that crown (check out the cover by Walk off the Earth below).

“When iHeartRadio approached me about doing a free show at Vector, I flipped out,” says Lorde. “Playing for New Zealand audiences is a huge treat for me, and this show in particular is going to be really cool.”

The free iHeartRadioLorde concert will be on Saturday 7 September at 8pm at Vector Arena. Registered users of iHeartRadio will receive an exclusive invitation for two free tickets on a first-in first-served arrangement.

TRN has also been shopping iHeartRadio around the agencies. It visited 14 agencies distributing 1,000 iHeartRadio USB sticks. Each stick was loaded with a promotional video and after viewing the promo one person in each agency was surprised with a 'winner' displaying on the end screen. They received a Samsung Chromebook from announcers Jay, Flynny and Jacqui from ZM, Dr Fane, TarshIeremia and Pete daPalagi of the Flava Full Phat Breakfast and Hauraki’s Matt Heath.

“iHeartRadio offers companies a unique and very cool way to communicate with its potential or existing customers," says TRN’s head of agency channel and integrated solutions Margaret Hawker.

iHeartRadio reached 20 million registered users faster than any digital service in internet history and has reached over  30 million registered users in the USA in less than two years, making it second only to Instagram as the fastest growing digital service in history and growing twice as fast as Facebook did.
