Inaugural #smcakl Awards serve up night of social media celebration, memories of Twitter faux pas and waffle-scented trophies

The first ever #smcakl awards were held last night at Britomart Country Club to a full house of corporates, social media enthusiasts and digital types.

Rather the standard gilded statuettes of African animals or small humans, the trophies collected by the winners at the event were 3D printed hashtags made by Vivienda, an Auckland-based 3D printing company and BizDojo resident.

Fun fact …

The first award of the night went to NZ Post for their Websam and NZ Secret Santa campaigns. NZ Secret Santa encouraged twitter users to stalk someone to find out what they like and then send them the gift through the mail. Recipients were then encouraged to take a photo of their present and use the hashtag #NZSecretSanta.

Lorde took out the award for Most Epic Tweet when she reminded us all that beauty is only skin deep. This tweet has received a crazy 73,000 retweets and nearly 10,000 favourites. Unfortunately, she was on a plane and wasn’t able to collect the award in person.

Meteoric Rise on Social Media went to Neighbourly, the new social platform aiming to create local connections in New Zealand communities.

Nokia NZ picked up the Social Media Whoopsie Award for their Infamous “Fuck you” tweet at the end of last year. The award aimed to not only highlight this epic fail but also a good recovery from the Nokia team. Needless to say no one from Nokia was there to receive the award.

The awards finished with the Best Display of a Social Conscience award. Tim Corbett won this for Louis’ Dream Trip. Corbett was able to take his son Louis all the way to the US to see the Boston Celtics with the help of many financial backers, showing social media does indeed have a good side. Louis has a condition that is causing him to gradually lose his sight.

The #smcakls were made possible by major sponsors Vodafone and Oracle. Other supporters included Britomart Country Club, The Goat Farm, Pandora Radio, Big Colour, Bizdojo, Rekorderling Cider, Conferenz, Interlike and Getty Images.
