Metro steps out from under MagShop banner

Metro magazine has its own shiny new iPad app, which stands alone outside the MagShop app previously used by the title. MagShop had also been home to the North and South and Kia Ora iPad versions before previous owner ACP was acquired by Bauer last year.

The app is free to download from iTunes, then users can buy single issues for $8.29 (less than the print cover price of $9.90) or subscribe for a year for $49.99.

The strategy is to keep it simple, says staff writer Catherine McGregor. “It’s a digital replica of the magazine. There aren’t a lot of bells and whistles, people just want to be able to read the magazine.”

PDFs are sent to Bauer’s team in Australia and are available via the app the same day as the print magazine goes on sale, says McGregor.

The app is also a way to get Metro into the hands of readers nationwide, she says. “One of the problems with Metro is people can find it quite difficult to find the magazine out of Auckland. We’ve had reports of popular issues like the Lorde issue selling out in some towns.”

Metro’s Eats app is available for the iPhone.
