After 15 years with Colenso BBDO, five as its Managing Director, Scott Coldham has announced he is leaving the agency to take on a new set of opportunities with a tech start-up.

Coldham’s next chapter will see him take up the position of Chief Marketing Officer with New Zealand technology company Whip Around and local menswear brand Asuwere.

He has led Colenso BBDO since 2015 and, together with Chief Creative Officer Levi Slavin and Creative Chairman Nick Worthington, helped build it into one of the world’s most successful creative companies.

Worthington says Coldham has become a dynamic and respected leader who very much grew up in the business.

“Scott joined Colenso as an Account Manager in 2006 and learned from some of the best in the business, ultimately becoming our Managing Director in 2015. He has an incredible intellect and a passion for innovation, which has been critical in the transformation of our culture and capability here in Auckland.

“We’ve always held a view that we ‘want to be the best in the world, from the bottom of the world’ and to do that, we have to encourage global perspectives and opportunities.

“Like all our best and brightest, Scott has an opportunity to learn and grow in different fields and markets. We wish him well and are genuinely excited for him.”

Clemenger Group NZ Chairman Jim Gall says Coldham had been a great champion of the work and his colleagues.

“We thank Scott for his significant contribution to our business and we wish him every success as he takes on the world with his new ventures.”

Clemenger Group is undertaking a global search to replace Coldham, who will depart at the end of April.

Cathy O’Connor starts her role today as CEO of oOh!media, becoming the first new leader since its founding more than 30 years ago.

As one of the most influential leaders in Australian media, O’Connor takes the helm after 12 successful years as CEO of Nova Entertainment Group, and five years prior to that as Managing Director of DMG Radio.

She replaces founding CEO Brendon Cook, who transformed oOh! from a small start-up in the late 1980s to an ASX-listed industry leader. Cook will continue to consult for the company as the economy recovers after a challenging 2020.

O’Connor said she was pleased to get started following the announcement of her appointment in August last year, and was looking forward to meeting as many employees, clients and investors as possible over the coming weeks.

“It’s great to join such a dynamic company. We have strong growth prospects, a robust and evolving business model, and significant investments in data, audience insights, content and creative that will contribute to the next stage of our evolution – it’s an exciting place to be right now.

“I’d like to thank Chairman Tony Faure, Brendon, and the rest of the team for making me feel so welcome.

“While the effects of the pandemic continue to be felt, we have managed the balance sheet responsibly. Audiences are returning, and we now have numerous opportunities to grow the business while developing great teams, driving efficiencies, and building strong networks in corporate and agency environments.”

After being crowded ‘New Zealand Agency of the Year’ at both the B&T Agency of the Year Awards and Campaign Asia Agency of the Year Awards, Special Group has further strengthened its creative department with the full time appointment of Matt Simpkins as Group Creative Director.

Simpkins has been working with Special Group since March on campaigns including Optus and Tourism New Zealand.

“[Matt’s] just finished the recent Silver Fern Farms campaign, a no-punches-pulled OOH project for LegaSea, and he’s been a mainstay on Tourism New Zealand throughout the year, producing a huge volume of work for the international tourism campaign. All whilst working through a couple of lockdowns,” says Tony Bradbourne, CEO/COO at Special Group.

Opus creative.

Simpkins says that he’s happy to now be officially part of the team. “When you work with a great team like Special, you bring your A game every day. I’m stoked to be officially onboard and to have been involved in so much great work this year,” he says.

Horrocks, who established himself as an early pioneer of the mobile app industry will take up the position from February 8, 2021.

He co-founded the world’s first commercial iPhone app company in 2007, Polar Bear Farm, and is one of a number of high powered, experienced New Zealand entrepreneurs who’ve built internationally successful digital enterprises.

Returning to New Zealand from abroad amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, Horrocks says that he is delighted to be home with his family.

“I’m extremely excited to be joining the Board of NZME, especially at a time where the company is so uniquely placed to avail itself of the opportunities of this changing environment,” said Horrocks.

With clients including Expedia, DreamWorks, HBO, OREO, CNN, Time Magazine as well as The New Zealand Herald, Horrocks helped launch over 100 mobile apps with his award-winning mobile agency Carnival Labs, many of which were featured by Apple.

Barbara Chapman, NZME’s Chairman, told the NZX in a statement that she is delighted to welcome Horrocks to the NZME Board. “Guy brings a background in successfully growing digital businesses, strong capability in the commercialisation of data and a focussed entrepreneurial mindset to our Board.”

Horrocks originally set up Carnival Labs to target casual gaming, entertainment and advertising apps but then swiftly broadened Carnival Labs’ scope to also including high profile work for global brands like Nestle, Pepsi, DreamWorks, Kraft Foods and Taco Bell.

Carnival subsequently launched a mobile marketing automation platform that was acquired by Sailthru in 2016.

Horrocks has since launched a new real-time data warehouse called SOLVE.

“Guy will bring an incredible level of depth and understanding to support NZME to best connect our wide range of digital platforms with our significant and growing audiences and our loyal commercial partners,” adds Michael Boggs, CEO at NZME.

Mark Cochrane has been appointed to the newly created dual role of CEO of Saatchi & Saatchi and Chief Growth Officer, Publicis Groupe New Zealand.

Publicis Groupe has undergone significant expansion and transformation over the past year in New Zealand – with the acquisitions of Digitas Affinity ID and MBM, and the launch of PR Network MSL.

Michael Rebelo, Publicis Groupe’s CEO of New Zealand and Australia says: “As a result of this expansion, we have needed to look afresh at the leadership structure in New Zealand and have taken the decision to create this new role. I am delighted that Mark will be returning to his Kiwi roots after seven stand-out years with the network, building his experience.

“I have every confidence in Mark’s leadership. It’s fantastic to have him return home.”

Cochrane has worked with Saatchi & Saatchi and the Publicis Groupe in New Zealand and around the network for over 10 years.

He spent the last five years as Managing Director of Saatchi & Saatchi Melbourne, having launched the agency in 2015. Cochrane created a progressive creative offering and culture there, growing the agency to over 55 people, with clients including the Bank of Melbourne, Visit Victoria, L’Oréal, Devondale, Bike Exchange, Victorian Election Commission and the Royal Australian Mint.

Cochrane says: “I am humbled and excited by the opportunity to come home and lead Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand’s next chapter. When I think of the leaders that have walked the hallowed halls of this office, it’s an absolute privilege. I also revere the recent work created by the agency. It’s a testament to Paul Wilson and the team’s NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE spirit, and the clients who lead those great brands. I look forward to continuing and adding to the momentum.”

With this new model however, comes the need for change.

Rebelo says: “As part of this process, Paul Wilson and I have agreed that it is the right time for him to hand over the reins and for a new leader to take us forward.

“Paul has had an incredible track record with the agency – building a strong, inclusive culture and delivering world-class work for our clients.

“Always hands-on with the work and with a deep care for his people, Paul leaves the agency on a high and in a strong position. We would like to thank Paul for the contribution he has made to Saatchi & Saatchi during his nearly eight years with the agency. From Group Business Director to General Manager and then Managing Director, he has been a stellar performer and all-round good human to work with.”

Wilson says: “Although naturally it is sad to be leaving after eight years, I also feel a huge sense of pride and satisfaction to be departing on such a high, having produced the world-class work we did for Chorus and Hilux in particular, and in a year like 2020. No one has more Saatchi & Saatchi blood in their veins than Mark, so I know he’s the ideal person to build on this momentum and take the agency forward.”

Cochrane starts his role early in the New Year.
