Incidents that cannot be classified as normal: TVNZ welcomes Wellington Paranormal

TVNZ has launched its campaign for Wellington Paranormal, the mockumentary created by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement.

In the 45-second spot, the audience is introduced to Wellington Police Sergeant Ruawai Maaka who has set up its first Paranormal Unit as strange occurrences, such as crop circles and a person climbing up the wall of a jail cell, having been happening in the capital city.

Fitting to the mockumentary-tone, the video’s ending shares the same voiceover as TVNZ’s factual Police Ten 7 series.

It introduces Officers Minogue and O’Leary, who also featured in Clement and Waititi’s vampire hit What We Do In The Shadows, and has the same type of Kiwi dry humour as the film.

Included in the campaign are street posters which mix up the NZ Police’s recruitment campaign ‘Better work stories’ with classic wanted posters and supernatural puns.

The campaign was created in-house by TVNZ Blacksand, with Starcom providing external media support. It will roll out over the next fortnight, with new media each day.

The show begins Wednesday 11 July on TVNZ 2.
