APN sweeps up MediaWeb’s mess, wins Deloitte Top 200 partnership rights

Following the receivership of MediaWeb, NZ Management Magazine was bought by the NZIM and given to Adrenalin to publish alongside its existing title NZ Business. MediaWeb used to own the Deloitte Top 200 Awards, which celebrate New Zealand’s most outstanding large businesses and their people, and the event was seen as a “cash cow and jewel in the crown” of the company. But it’s thought the IP was transferred to Deloitte when MediaWeb couldn’t pay the bills, so, without anyone to run this year’s awards, it recently put that business on the block and APN New Zealand has won it.

The New Zealand Herald and Newstalk ZB will promote, organise, manage and co-host the event, which is celebrating its 25th year. And APN is confident the partnership will make the awards even more successful than they already are.

“It’s a momentous year for the event and we know the Herald and Newstalk ZB will deliver fantastic profile across print, digital and radio,” says Jane Hastings, chief executive of APN NZ Media. “We’re proud to be working on this event and our editorial team is excited to promote it to our readers and listeners. Fran O’Sullivan is the best in the business and her dedicated business feature will be sure to resonate with business leaders around the country.”

Deloitte chief executive Thomas Pippos says APN has a strong presence and deep reach into the New Zealand business community and proven experience in organising successful corporate events. And it’s looking forward to working together to continue to build on the heritage of the Top 200 as “the pinnacle of corporate recognition in New Zealand for the next 25 years and beyond”.

An online content hub for the Top 200 Awards will be hosted on the nzherald.co.nz business section, and video content will sit within ‘Meet the Sponsors’ profiling the sponsor chief executive, the company and their involvement in the awards.

Finalists will be announced in the last week of October and the winners crowned at the black-tie awards dinner on 27 November.

Speaking of MediaWeb, we received an email from a former MediaWeb staff member recently who was “disgusted” to see failed director Toni Myers active on LinkedIn, where she is touting herself as a ‘contract journalist, editor and project manager‘.

“Clearly Myers is living on a different planet than the rest of her former colleagues, who were effectively dangled as Myers’ ‘strategies’ sucked the cashflow out of the publishing house. Whether it was creating ‘Just Good Business,’ a shortlived and disastrous venture into eco-commerce, or envisaging a re-incarnated MediaWeb with ties to Asian commercial networks, Myers was out of her depth from the moment she took hold of the TPL titles. Even as late as January 2014 the failed director was reaching out to former staff members with offers of work, despite knowing the company could not meet its costs. To post on a public social media network that ‘you developed media strategies to adapt to shifts’ when your venture ended in complete disgrace shows Myers clearly lacks a grip on reality. She developed no such thing.”
