QR codes do their best to connect consumers to content with a mobile phone and a bunch of squares and shapes. But Nick Butler reckons they’re an artefact only a motherboard could love.

Recycling really should be second nature by now, but it doesn’t take much more than a look around to see there’s still plenty of work to be done in terms of education. So in an effort to fill up those 1000-odd recycling bins all around the country, Love NZ has just pushed play on a six-week campaign by McCann Melbourne and its direct and digital arm MRM called It’s A Karma Thing, which exhorts Kiwis to ‘do the right thing’ and earn points they can then redeem for prizes.
As smartphones become more prevalent, QR codes are picking up steam and are now seen more regularly on ads, on products and even on t-shirts at festivals in Poland. Most of the time, the fairly ugly, alien-esque black and white shapes are employed to disseminate information—or offers—but there are some pretty creative options now available (Kiwi company Set QR is leading the way in this regard) and one of the coolest QR executions we’ve seen recently is this print ad for Panasonic that was made by Publicis Mojo Auckland to go on the cover of trade publication Wares Magazine.
