Media Munchies: Jeremy Wells

Jeremy Wells is prolific in the media. One minute he might be fooling around with the Alternative Commentary Collective, next minute he’ll be imitating Mike Hosking on Hauraki, then he might pop up on-screen in a Meridian ad. Here’s what media the deadpan disc-jockey consumes in his own time.

Hauraki breakfast team follow in successful stations’ footsteps, APN gets in on the cross-promotion action

Radio Hauraki has fully embraced its 13th most-listened to breakfast show tag in recent months, with Jeremy Wells’ brilliant ‘Like Mike’ section being born out of a desire to replicate Mike Hosking’s morning success and a new online video series showing the team heeding memos from on high and doing a few things guaranteed to move them up the rankings, such as using t-shirt cannons and adding some sexual tension to the mix. And, as per usual, they’ve done it in slightly unusual, self-deprecating and moderately NSFW fashion.

The humour/horror of Health Corner

The Late Night Big Breakfast, a pisstake of morning chat shows that started off on Moon TV, is set in a furniture shop and stars Leigh Hart, Jeremy Wells and Jason Hoyte, is two episodes in and it’s a study in ridiculous, awkward and often-physical humour. Some, like the Herald’s Greg Dixon, haven’t seen the funny side of the interrupting hosts, the confused guests, or the surreal segments. But others seem to like it. And while parodies of advertorials are low-hanging fruit from a comedy perspective, this industry can no doubt see the funny side of Hoyte’s beskivvied perfomances in Health Corner.

Like rust, Radio Hauraki’s breakfast team never sleeps

Radio Hauraki’s newish breakfast team has been getting plenty of love recently, largely as a result of the brilliant Like Mike segment, in which Jeremy Wells channels his inner Mike Hosking in an effort to improve its position as the 13th most-listened to breakfast show in the country. And the station is continuing that quest and aiming to improve its standing in the eyes of those who respect sleep deprivation and alcohol-based fun with a 24 hour stunt called #nosleeptilbreakfast, which saw the hosts take a trip to Waiheke, visit salubrious tourist haunts like Showgirls and SkyCity, hug Leigh Hart’s dog, stay awake and booze all night and then bravely/foolishly do their morning radio show.

Wells channels his inner Hosking

Mike Hosking is one of the country’s most popular broadcasters, and he’s renowned for his strongly voiced opinions on Newstalk ZB and Seven Sharp, where many believe his introduction as host along with Toni Street has been the catalyst for improving ratings this year. But not everyone agrees with his sometimes controversial views, with one Facebook commenter saying he’s a “bitter middle aged men with too much money and power”. So Jeremy Wells, breakfast co-host of Newstalk ZB’s sister station Radio Hauraki, has riffed on Hosking’s love of ranting with a series of brilliant impressions.
