There was a fair bit of chatter in the market last year after the Great Ratings Drop of 2013, something the broadcasters and their research partner Nielsen put down to a range of factors, including an improving economy, a mild winter and changing media consumption habits. There’s perhaps no item more symbolic of an owner’s personality than the car they drive. Creative types seem pretty keen on interesting cars. So every few weeks we ask someone in the biz to tell us about their steed. Last time it was TBWA\’s chief creative officer Toby Talbot and his Volvo P1800 and this time it’s DraftFCB Media’s general manager Simon Teagle and his 1966 Ford Mustang GT.
For the past few years, Unitec, Special Group and Naked—which has recently closed and been reborn as Open—have tried to bring a bit more chutzpah to the education sector and change the impression of the institution in potential students’ minds, first with the ‘Change Starts Here’ docu-ads and then with the trade-focused follow-up, ‘We Make the People who Make it’. There were 730 media folk in their gladrags, a couple of unfortunate but highly comical stage mishaps, some well-received self-deprecating humour from Martin Devlin, some cheeky on-stage planking hijinks and a large sumo wrestler dishing out gongs—quite literally—at the CAANZ Media Awards last night at the Langham in Auckland. And it was DraftFCB Media and OMD that left with the biggest smiles.
The Axis festivities have wound up for another year and Justin Mowday has finally got out of That Guy’s tub. Now it’s time for the CAANZ Media Awards to kick into gear and OMD has got off to a flyer.
As part of its big brand launch, New World staff, with the help of .99, recently breathed some life into vegetables (literally, to the tune of ‘Slice of Heaven’). And they’ve followed that up by breathing some life into the humble shopping basket, with its cutesy animated mascots, the Cleverbaskets, assuming their position as the new faces of the supermarket’s retail marketing.
Auckland’s Hyatt Regency Hotel was abuzz with unbridled joy, glee and envy last night as the CAANZ Media Awards rewarded the best strategic insights in the media industry. And the “precise marrying of message and moment” by DraftFCB Media in a campaign for Whitcoulls that linked book recommendations to specific television programming took home the coveted Best in Show award.
