The Commercial Communications Council has released the finalists for the upcoming Axis Awards and it’s set to be Colenso BBDO’s night for the second year running as it makes the list 80 times. The agency is followed by DDB Group’s 53 mentions, Ogilvy & Mather’s 41, Clemenger BBDO Wellington’s 37 and FCB’s 33. We check out some of the work set to score on the night.
CAANZ has released the finalists for the upcoming Axis Awards, and it’s shaping up to be Colenso BBDO’s night as it makes the list 94 times, followed by FCB Advertising and DDB Group both with 43 entries and Ogilvy behind with 42.
This morning, those in the industry were reminded that print isn’t as slow as slow as what everyone suggests it is. Before any online publications released any information on the Axis Awards, the Magazine Publishers Association (MPA) had a specially printed magazine delivered to all the agencies that were in attendance. And, as an added bonus, the delivery also inlcuded a much-needed Red Bull.
Last night, for the 35th edition of the Axis Awards, the nation’s ad folk descended on SkyCity in their finest robes for a night of celebrating the best work produced in the industry over the course of the last year.
379 entries across 75 categories have made it through to the finals of the Axis Awards, with FCB leading the way on 54, followed by Colenso BBDO with 49 and DDB with 47. Special Group has 31 finalists and Saatchi & Saatchi rounded out the top five with 26 finalists.
The tenth and final Axis love letter has been released ahead of the show on March 6, and it’s another doozy, with DDB’s Mark Lorrigan harnessing the immense power of song to showcase his intense and probably illegal devotion to Y&R in ‘It ain’t stalking if I love you’.
The creative oneupmanship is in full effect for the Axis ‘Share the Love’ campaign, with some very entertaining inter-agency love letters being sent. And the penultimate clip from Y&R, which takes a leaf out of Jimmy Kimmel’s Celebrities Read Mean Tweets by getting DDB staff to read mean blog posts about their work—followed by some nice ones at the end—has just been released.
Last week Special Group made Barnes Catmur & Friends a quilt of love as part of the Axis Call for Entries campaign. And, after a slight delay due to ‘censorship issues’, Barnes, Catmur & Friends has returned the favour, with creative managing partner Paul Catmur embracing the confrontational interviewer within, aggressively singing the praises of his fellow indie and probably ensuring his agency will never be bought by WPP.
In the early days of America, it’s thought the colonisers gave blankets to the native Americans as gifts, but added in a surprise in the form of smallpox. And Special Group, as part of the Axis Share the Love campaign, has done something similar (without the murderous intent) by creating a “nine-panel, hand-crafted tribute” to Barnes, Catmur & Friends and lacing it with a dose of good-natured cheekiness.
The creative love may have been shared in the call for entries campaign, but now the creative competition begins, because the 2014 Axis finalists have been announced and Colenso BBDO/Proximity is in a familiar position atop the list with 56 nods, followed closely by DraftFCB on 54, DDB on 37 and Saatchi & Saatchi on 30. Plus: Clemenger BBDO’s new Axis logo.
Saatchi & Saatchi, Blacksand and Trade Tested clink eggnog glasses in the last round of 2013.
After a fairly controversial 2012, CAANZ and a bunch of senior ad folk engineered a few big changes to this year’s Axis proceedings to make the awards, as Colenso BBDO’s Nick Garrett said, a more collegial, more credible and more celebratory event that aimed to show the business community how influential creativity could be. And now CAANZ has announced some more changes to the programme for 2014.
As evidenced by the Axis exhibition in the Viaduct Events Centre last week, it’s good to see all the work done in one year in one place. And Saatchi & Saatchi and Flying Fish did just that as part of the Axis festivities, with a clip showing some of the quality video content created by local agencies and directors in 2012/2013.
Whybin\TBWA’s David Walden was honoured for his long—and entertaining—career in advertising on Thursday night at the Axis awards. So have a gander at this video to see what the people he has worked with over the years, like Andy Blood, ASB’s Barbara Chapman (who debunks a few myths), Roy Meares and Mike Hutcheson, had to say about the quintessential ad man, charming rogue and renowned restaurant-goer.
As purveyors of only the finest typos here at StopPress, we couldn’t help but notice this gem from last night’s Axis awards, where the name of a certain lifetime achievement award recipient was spelled wrong. Devo is thought to have demanded a public hanging to boost morale.
As director and filmmaker Tony Kaye said to the gathered marcomms folk yesterday afternoon during his mad but wise speech, “you’ve just got to keep making shit”. And of all the shit that was made in the past year and a bit in this country, DraftFCB’s Driving Dogs for Mini and SPCA was chosen as the best.
After last year’s issues, CAANZ gave the Axis Awards a good going over for 2013. And, as well as some changes to the judging and a new Getty Images Creative Exhibition, it’s also created a new event featuring six international speakers.
The virgins have been sacrificed, the entrails have been sorted through and the creative oracle has spoken in the form of the Axis finalists lists, with Colenso BBDO on top with 57, followed by DDB on 31 and DraftFCB on 28.
After last year’s Axis Awards, shit hit fans when two of the country’s best campaigns—NZTA’s Ghost Chips and Steinlager’s ‘We Believe’—were largely snubbed. Since then, CAANZ, the CAANZ board and a collection of the country’s executive creative directors have been working together to make sure it doesn’t happen again. And a few important changes were announced at an event last night at The Bluestone Room in Auckland.
Special Group won a couple of AXIS awards this year for its ‘Most Creative Country on Earth’ awards theme in 2011. And when Colenso BBDO was handed the reins for this year’s awards it ran with the idea of a metal detector and tapped into the rich vein of science-based humour seen in shows like Look Around You. So for those who weren’t there on the night, or for those who were there but were seeing how many breadsticks they could fit in their mouth, here’s the ’70’s-inspired opening sequence.
There was joy, despair, controversy, awkward humour and even a foil-wrapped baked potato that was removed from the host’s pants. So now that you’ve digested and discussed all the winners, here’s your regular helping of visual evidence from AXIS 2012.
Bathed in the green hue of ’70s inspired laser body scanners and violated by the sight of Leigh Hart’s velour one piece, 750-ish adfolk ventured down to the Viaduct Events Centre last night to watch Colenso BBDO’s Doggelganger campaign for Pedigree repeat Yellow Chocolate’s performance last year by taking the Grand, Titanium and Interactive AXIS. But, as is usually the case, the awards weren’t without some controversy.
The Marketing Association celebrated the use of insight-driven marketing and data last week. And CAANZ will soon be celebrating what could be seen as the opposite end of the marcomms spectrum with the creatively-focused Axis Awards. And after 50 judges—and presumably the wonderous Axis Metal Detector—spent three days scanning the very best work in New Zealand this year, regular creative award-hogger Colenso BBDO came out on top with a massive 57 finalist nominations, followed by Special Group with another excellent showing on 21 and DDB Group and Clemenger BBDO on 17.
The call for entries for the 2012 CAANZ Media Awards, which was led by DDB’s Chris Hancock and Chris Schofield, went out today, with a theme that tongue-and-cheekily references the Mayan doomsday prophesy. And while we all wonder about the future of mankind, CAANZ has taken the opportunity to announce a host of changes to the Media and the other awards it runs.
The 2012 Axis Call for Entries has gone out. So get those entries in… and find out if your blood, sweat, and tears are worth any gold, silver, or bronze.
The Axis Awards are now available to view on TVNZ Ondemand in glorious technicolour, so fill you boots with an edited package of the creative hoedown that includes red carpet highlights, as well as numerous interviews with gold winners, industry luminaries and the esteemed international judges explaining why they awarded certain campaigns. As a founding member and the first course leader of the AdSchool at Media Design School, David Bell has whipped a multitude of young advertising minds into shape and readied them for the cut and thrust of the real ad world. And to honour these efforts over the years, he was handed the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2011 CAANZ Axis Awards last week.
