MPA shows off the speed of magazines

This morning, those in the industry were reminded that print isn’t as slow as slow as what everyone suggests it is. Before any online publications released any information on the Axis Awards, the Magazine Publishers Association (MPA) had a specially printed magazine delivered to all the agencies that were in attendance. And, as an added bonus, the delivery also inlcuded a much-needed Red Bull.

A matter of fact: Barnes, Catmur & Friends goes into bat for Special Group
By

Last week Special Group made Barnes Catmur & Friends a quilt of love as part of the Axis Call for Entries campaign. And, after a slight delay due to ‘censorship issues’, Barnes, Catmur & Friends has returned the favour, with creative managing partner Paul Catmur embracing the confrontational interviewer within, aggressively singing the praises of his fellow indie and probably ensuring his agency will never be bought by WPP.

In the early days of America, it’s thought the colonisers gave blankets to the native Americans as gifts, but added in a surprise in the form of smallpox. And Special Group, as part of the Axis Share the Love campaign, has done something similar (without the murderous intent) by creating a “nine-panel, hand-crafted tribute” to Barnes, Catmur & Friends and lacing it with a dose of good-natured cheekiness.

We wish you a merry Axis: CAANZ keeps the changes rolling with new dates and categories
By

After a fairly controversial 2012, CAANZ and a bunch of senior ad folk engineered a few big changes to this year’s Axis proceedings to make the awards, as Colenso BBDO’s Nick Garrett said, a more collegial, more credible and more celebratory event that aimed to show the business community how influential creativity could be. And now CAANZ has announced some more changes to the programme for 2014.

Axis: a year in the life of Kiwi advertising

As evidenced by the Axis exhibition in the Viaduct Events Centre last week, it’s good to see all the work done in one year in one place. Whybin\TBWA’s David Walden was honoured for his long—and entertaining—career in advertising on Thursday night at the Axis awards. So have a gander at this video to see what the people he has worked with over the years, like Andy Blood, ASB’s Barbara Chapman (who debunks a few myths), Roy Meares and Mike Hutcheson, had to say about the quintessential ad man, charming rogue and renowned restaurant-goer.

The rebirth of Axis

After last year’s Axis Awards, shit hit fans when two of the country’s best campaigns—NZTA’s Ghost Chips and Steinlager’s ‘We Believe’—were largely snubbed. Since then, CAANZ, the CAANZ board and a collection of the country’s executive creative directors have been working together to make sure it doesn’t happen again. And a few important changes were announced at an event last night at The Bluestone Room in Auckland.

Special Group won a couple of AXIS awards this year for its ‘Most Creative Country on Earth’ awards theme in 2011. And when Colenso BBDO was handed the reins for this year’s awards it ran with the idea of a metal detector and tapped into the rich vein of science-based humour seen in shows like Look Around You. So for those who weren’t there on the night, or for those who were there but were seeing how many breadsticks they could fit in their mouth, here’s the ’70’s-inspired opening sequence.

Bathed in the green hue of ’70s inspired laser body scanners and violated by the sight of Leigh Hart’s velour one piece, 750-ish adfolk ventured down to the Viaduct Events Centre last night to watch Colenso BBDO’s Doggelganger campaign for Pedigree repeat Yellow Chocolate’s performance last year by taking the Grand, Titanium and Interactive AXIS. But, as is usually the case, the awards weren’t without some controversy.
