A single word can make a difference

Changing the world doesn’t necessarily necessitate huge, ground-breaking actions. Sometimes even small actions can make a difference. To show the simplicity of this process, Amnesty International has released a new campaign illustrating that the substitution of a single word in a phrase can completely change meaning and context of what you are saying.

Narrating the thoughts of a man during his drive home, the ad first paints the picture of a prejudiced man behind the wheel who shows disdain for immigrants, homosexuals, Muslims and homeless people.

But then, when the action rewinds and starts again, the prejudicial words are substituted with alternatives—showing that sometimes the entire context of a phrase can be changed with the removal of a single word.

At the end of the short clip, viewers are pointed to a web browser extension that employs this strategy of removing prejudicial words during the user’s online browsing experience.
