One desk for all

There’s a bit of an arms race when it comes of offices at the moment, and particularly when it comes to tech companies, which appear to have a desire to out-cool each other with their massive HQs and quirky additions (check out this Vanity Fair story about what Apple, Facebook, Google and others are doing in Silicon Valley and San Fran at the moment). But New York-based digital creative shop The Barbarian Group has upped the stakes by showing off what is undoubtedly the coolest desk ever created.

Typically renowned for creating amazing digital thingees, like the creative coding project called Cinder that took out the inaugural Cannes Innovation Lion last year, the agency has taken its theory of ideas that provoke a reaction into meat space, enlisting architect Clive Wilkinson to create a resin and wood construction for its new office that can sit all 125 current staff (it can fit up to 175) and offers a number of hidey holes as well.

As its website says:

IT’S NOT A HALF-PIPE. IT’S AN AWESOME DESK.

At The Barbarian Group, we believe in the power of ideas to provoke a reaction.  So when challenged with our own brief – to keep the Barbarian tribe happy and inspired everyday – we turned to Clive Wilkinson, an architect who shares our passion for interesting ideas in a world pre-disposed to boring sameness.

The challenge was to create the most collaborative, creative environment possible.  The result?  A desk that we could all share, literally – 4,400 square feet of undulating, unbroken awesomeness to keep people and ideas flowing.

So come say hello, have a drink, pull up a chair and let’s create something worth talking about.

And if you want to know a bit more, The New York Times had a chat with the man behind the ‘Super Desk’.
