Hard times for Healthy Harold

In primary schools across New Zealand and Australia, kids eagerly await the annual visit by Life Education’s Healthy Harold. Never mind that it’s a fun and informative way to learn about healthy eating, Harold’s visits were also the perfect excuse to get away from class and sit in a dark van with a puppet giraffe. And while the majority of us have only ever been acquainted with the iconic mascot from the neck up, Harold has decided to step out from the shadows and speak up in response to news that the Australian government might be about to cut his funding.

Speaking on SBS Viceland’s The Feed, the self-titled educator, healthcare expert and giraffe shares his story, saying that the government’s move was something he’d been expecting for a long time.

“I wasn’t that surprised, to be honest. A couple of years ago, I saw the education minister Simon Birmingham attack a giraffe puppet with a zebra puppet. And when I saw that, I knew the writing was on the wall.”

Harold then got a bit dark by saying that after 30 years of sobriety, the news that he might be out of funding had him thinking that “a line of coke and a shot of Jack wouldn’t be that bad right now.”

He then implores us to consider the others who’d be affected by the cuts, such as “the person whose hand is up me”.

But luckily, Harold’s back on his hooves after the government backtracked on its comments and announced it would save Life Education from budget cuts.

Let’s hope Harold goes back to being his sprightly self.
