Year in Review: Fletch, Vaughan and Megan, ZM

Every year, StopPress asks players in the local industry for their reflections on the marketing year that was. Here’s what ZM’s Fletch, Vaughan and Megan have to say.

1. Favourite local campaign that isn’t yours

The ongoing, timeless campaign where Lily from Big Save Furniture has ordered too many beds and sofas and needs to sell them before her Dad finds out.

2. Favourite campaign that is yours

Vaughan: ‘Ovember’. I liked it because it made no sense to anyone—even me and it was my idea. It was 20 business days in November themed around words that ended with an O sound. There were many costumes; for ‘Frodo-Vember’, ‘Let It Go Vember’ and ‘Zorro-Vember’. ‘Joes in a Rowvember’ tried to get as many Joes in a Row on the phone as possible, got to 18 consecutive Joes. Banjos, Rodeos, Game Shows, ‘Blowvember’, ‘Play Dough-vember’, ‘Tae Kwon Do-Vember’, ‘Vino-vember’ and ‘CEO-vember’ to name a few.

3. Favourite international campaign

Harambe – that zoo really made us want to visit.

4. Least favourite campaign

David Bowie’s new album. Did he have to die to promote his new album? Seems a bit extreme.

5. Your own biggest success

Getting Colin Meads to break his media silence, by calling in to win Justin Bieber tickets.

6. Most significant launch/innovation/thing of the year

Pokemon Go – Vaughan is still the only one playing.

7. What should be un-inevented?

Pokemon Go – because Vaughan is still the only one playing.

8. Lamest trend

The Dab – bloody stupid you kids.

9. Best brands

Beats by Dre. Nike. Apple. Google. Samsung….Vaughan, are you just naming popular brands? “Yes I am”.

10. Best stoush

The Real Housewives of New Zealand “boat N” word debacle.

11. Heroes

Deadpool – best movie of the year!

12. Villains

Brian Tamaki. Give us strength.

13. What died in 2016?

Harambe, what little faith we had left in America and all of the pot plants in my New World little garden.

14. What’s the biggest mistake marketers will make in 2017?

Thinking that people will want to follow an unexciting corporate brand’s social media

15. Will the robots become sentient and kill us all (asking for a friend)?

No. Wall-E would never do that.
