Year in Review: Corey Chalmers & Guy Roberts, Saatchi & Saatchi

In keeping with an ongoing tradition, a few industry players gave us their take on the year for our annual opinion harvest. Here’s what Corey Chalmers and Guy Roberts, executive creative directors of Saatchi & Saatchi, had to say.

1. Favourite local campaign that isn’t yours.

CC: No more Beersies 2.0.

GR:  Steinlager Deep dive. The TV was awesome (if he’d laid off the Steinies he may have got there). 

2. Favourite campaign that is yours

CC: ASB Smurfette/Robot. Great acting, awesome direction, cool client.

GR: Force Fit. An idea beyond advertising.

3. Favourite international campaign 

CC: Comedians in Cars Drinking Coffee

GR: British Airways’ interactive plane recognising billboards. Simply brilliant.

4. Least favourite campaign

CC: Speight’s Ginger Beer

GR: FCB’s Self promotional dingle berries

5. Your own biggest success

CC: Getting the ECD chair would have to be up there!

GR: Getting the other one!

6. Favourite magazine/website/TV show/radio show/podcast/news service/app/song/other.

7. Most ridiculous buzzword

CC: Big Data. Ugh.

GR: Phygital (grrrrrr)

8. Best innovation

CC: Koru club coffee order via Air NZ app. Bit flash.

GR: Cully’s Oyster Hot Sauce. 

9. Most over-hyped ‘innovation’

CC: Google Glass

GR: 3D printing

10. Best brands

CC: Air NZ, All Blacks, Panhead Brewery 

GR: Thomson Whisky, Oak St Bootmakers, Hilux

11. Best stoush

CC: The Labour party leadership debacle. And they still chose another funny looking dude with no personality to speak of.

GR. Eminem’s lawyers vs. The National Party

12. Heroes  

CC: James Napier Robertson and Tom Hern – director and producer of The Dark Horse. Not even out of their 20s when they made it. Incredible.

GR: William Trubridge. One hell of a career choice.

13. Villains

C.C. Corban from The Block. I currently get mistaken for him about five times a week.

G.R. Corey from across the desk. I currently get mistaken for him about five times a week.

14. Predictions for 2015

C.C: ABs win another nailbiter against England to take the RWC 2015. 

G.R. There’s a very good chance that someone could Catch a Million.

  • According to Font’s recent survey, 43 percent of marketing professionals in New Zealand are looking to change jobs next year and 65 percent will be re-evaluating career plans over the Christmas period.
