Westfield scales up the romance as Kiwis take their love public

Nothing says I love you like a massive sign outside a mall. And, to tap into the romantic spirit of the day, Westfield has once again let New Zealanders publicly declare their affection on 12 billboards around the country as part of its second Truly, Madly, Hugely campaign.

There were thousands of entries, and three marriage proposals (including a request to re-marry after eloping for a courthouse wedding ten years ago), plenty of cheese, some innuendo and a couple of slices of humour made onto this year’s winning billboards, which popped up around Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch overnight. And, as well as public exposure, the winning romantics go into the draw for a $6000 diamond ring.

“Truly, Madly, Hugely is a great way to show a loved one how much they mean to you,” says Linda Trainer, general manager, Westfield New Zealand Shopping Centres. “Life’s too short to love quietly [ooooh, errrr] and Westfield is happy to help romantics shout a message of love to their special Valentine.”

  • As you can see, most of the winning entries are fairly earnest and we think there’s room for a bit more humour. So add your romantic billboard suggestion (“You still owe me $50” or “Marriage is the leading cause of divorce but…”, to the comment wall and we’ll send the best one a collection of crap prizes.
