Staff movements linked tenuously to earthquake

After the recent Canterbury earthquake, no-one wants to hear about any more movings and/or shakings. Except if it’s got anything to do with the enthralling recruitment carousel they call the marcomms industry.

Switching sides

Michele Teague, one of New Zealand’s most experienced marketers, has been named as the managing director of The Campaign Palace’s Sydney office.

She joins from Telecom New Zealand, where she was head of communications for retail and was instrumental in the branding campaign and launch of Telecom’s 3G XT mobile network last year. Teague has also had senior marketing and management roles at Restaurant Brands (operators of the KFC, Pizza Hut and Yum franchises in NZ), Pacific Retail Group, Woolworths and as global marketing manager for Air New Zealand, where she developed the ‘Inspiring Journeys’ brand strategy.

She started her career on the agency side, including eight years at Y&R’s Mattingly (Campaign Palace is a Y&R brand). And, showing her varied interests, she is also on the the board of the New Zealand Rugby League, chairing the remuneration committee.

“I am delighted to be joining an agency with such a wonderful creative body of work, and portfolio of blue chip brands. It’s an exciting time to be in the advertising industry as we embrace the challenges of new channels, content and branding of the complete customer journey,” she says, as soaring music plays in the background.

Campaign Palace executive chairman Mark Mackay says he searched globally to fill the Sydney post and Teague was the standout.

“Michele comes to us with an outstanding corporate background and will have serious credibility with our clients. Her experience with retail, FMCG and fast food, her ability to manage significant budgets and staff, and her track record in building and reviving brands, speaks for itself. She is a very good marketer who has an innate understanding of brand and retail communication. She’s also a pragmatic, capable leader and a great communicator.”

She starts on 11 October.

Digipost New Zealand’s general manager Stephen Douglas has been lured across to the Sydney offices of visual effects and design company Postmodern and feature facility Efilm, which was recently acquired by award-winning international VFX powerhouse CIS Visual Effects Group. He will take up the role of executive producer.

A highlight of his nine years in New Zealand was the time he spent working with Australasian production company, Film Construction, as general manager for both their New Zealand and Australian operations. Douglas left Film Construction on a high, with the company achieving ‘Production Company of the Year’ status at Axis 2007, and having picked up Silver and Bronze Lions at Cannes the same year.

Douglas joined Digipost as general manager in 2007 and spearheaded its expansion into international TVC markets.

“I have really enjoyed my time in New Zealand; the challenges and successes, and especially the great friends I’ve made,” he says. “It is a fantastic place to live and work; my family and I will definitely miss it. However, the opportunity to team up with the legendary Andrew Robinson and the creative people at Postmodern and Efilm was an opportunity not to be missed.”

ACP additions

ACP Magazines has promoted Fiona Lyon from group marketing manager of women’s titles to marketing director, a newly created position at ACP, and Toni Ellwood has been appointed to replace her.

Mine the gap

Mark Thompson, a marketing professional specialising in customer experience management, has joined Datamine in the role of senior business consultant, or Templar as it is known in the Datamine camp. His most recent role was marketing manager for HSBC.

“I’m looking forward to working with a range of companies to assist them in turning conceptual ideas into viable customer solutions,” he says. “I think one of the strengths I bring to the table is in defining and never losing focus on the customer’s end goal as we manage multiple inputs.”

Vicki Febery is also joining the team as account manager, or Owl, as those keraazee Dataminers call her. Febery has a wealth of experience in account management and marketing roles within the publishing industry, both in New Zealand and the United Kingdom. For several years, she has run her own marketing consultancy, specialising in magazine marketing for titles such as Oh Baby!

She will be responsible for the day to day account management of several of Datamine’s key clients.

“I thrive in fast-paced environments and am well versed in keeping many balls spinning at once!” says Vicki.

Sally Carey, Datamine director and head of Datamine’s client services team says the company is growth mode in 2010, having taken on a number of new staff since the beginning of the year.
