One street, ten stories: film series shows the many faces of K Road

Auckland’s Karangahape Road, known to locals simply as K road and formerly the hub of the city of sails’ seedy underbelly, has long been a subject of curiosity and ten short films soon to be released will tell stories inspired by one of New Zealand’s most famous locations.

K Rd Stories is a NZ On Air-funded initiative, which will present a collection of ten short web films telling stories about the infamous stretch of tarmac, premiering on 3 December.

A Facebook page has been established to promote the project and a 30-second compilation of the ten films on offer posted to the page to give viewers a dizzying snapshot of the K rd stories.

The films are funded through NZ on Air’s Digital Media Ignite fund, which earmarks  $300,000 each year to support “smart, innovative or experimental projects that make the most of the opportunities offered by the internet and digital media to reach different New Zealand audiences,” according to the NZ On Air website.

Additional funding for the project came from production partners Images and Sound, The Foley Room and Halcyon Digital.

James Solomon, a director at Flying Fish (winner along with FCB of Colmar Brunton’s Ad impact award for June for their Gregg’s TV spot “Relax: And have some fun with flavour”), is creative director for the project and says he was inspired by the location.

“We are representing a place that is culturally significant to so many New Zealanders – at a time that may in fact be the end of an era.”

Morgan Leigh Stewart, responsible for the gore fest Deathgasm, is the executive producer and says she is pleased with the diverse range of filmmakers who are involved.

“The calibre of talent that we have assembled for this project is astounding. Filmmakers from all stages of their careers have come together to tell their stories of a place that has such a special connection to so many.”

The front page of a website teases viewers with the tagline: ‘One legendary street. Ten unexpected stories. Anything could happen.’

The website also gives fans a synopsis of each film including Sugar Hit, written and directed by Roseanne Liang, which stars web series Flat 3 cast members, Perlina Lau, JJ Fong and Ally Xue in a story about three friends whose sugar hit “has an unintentionally mind-altering result”.

Other films include Aroha (written and directed by Nikki S’iulepa), and Solomon’s offering Broke, in which “A late night walk home for a young man leads to an awkward confrontation with a local drifter.”

The ten films will premiere at spots along Karangahape road on Thursday 3 December and will then be available online from 9am Tuesday 8 December on the website
