Self-promotion rewarded as Kiwi TV networks win plaudits at Promax

The Promax BDA awards aim to celebrate the world’s best brand, creative and marketing initiatives within the television industry—and the agencies and network creative departments responsible for them. And TVNZ and Spicer & Martin, Sky and Brandspank, and MediaWorks all returned home from the Australia/New Zealand ceremony last week in Sydney with a few gongs between them.

TVNZ also took a silver for Best Drama Campaign for Shortland Street’s 20th Anniversary, a silver for Best Traditional Animation for U Live, and, following up from last year’s recognition, One News took bronze in the News and Current Affairs category. TVNZ’s Mark Fleming was awarded gold in the Deign Rocket Award.

Over the past few years Spicer & Martin has produced on-air campaigns for TV One and “added high quality consistency of message across many of its flagship offerings”, including TV One’s brand and One News, as well as the hugely successful recent launch campaign for New Zealand’s Got Talent and the Coronation St 50 Year Celebration.

“All awards reflect a genuine team effort across marketing, TVNZ, Blacksand, Television and News,” says creative partner Scott Spicer. “We are all endeavouring to ensure TV One remains one of the most important and celebrated brands in New Zealand.”

For the first time Promax held a New Zealand only award conference and award ceremony this year, with Spicer & Martin and TV One nabbing three more golds

Last year Brandspank, a boutique creative production shop based in Arch Hill consisting of directors, designers, animators and a composer, took gold in the tougher Australasian awards for its work on Sky’s ‘All Blacks Skills’ campaign and this year it once again successfully did battle with the Australians, winning gold for Sky’s ‘Something’s Missing’ Sky Sport the Magazine campaign in Best Entertainment Promo and two silvers for its work on the ‘Sky at your finger tips’ Android App campaign in Best Integrated Marketing Campaign and Best Copywriting.

Perhaps even more prestigious than the wins, this year Brandspank was invited to provide the event branding and produce the conference opening film. Themed ‘The Art of Engagement’, Brandspank’s new director Logan Bradley created a 90 second animated film set out to produce audience engagement through an abstracted exploration of fine art mediums such as sculpture, paint and pigment. All design, animation and production was by Brandspank, including the original music score by in-house composer Nathan King.

Creative director Ant Farac says it is especially satisfying winning it in Australia as they would have seen a hundred promos for The Block in the past, plus the fact that it was produced on small budget—relative to our market and especially Australia’s—internally.
