Room with a view: NZ Rugby and Airbnb put special Eden Park box up for rent

Whether it’s a tipi, a treehouse or a big boot, there are plenty of strange Airbnb rentals available. But a spot in a stadium is one we haven’t seen before. That’s what Airbnb and NZ Rugby have done to celebrate the Bledisloe Cup Match on August 15, with a competition offering four people the chance to win an overnight stay in a remodelled, All Blacks-themed box.

It’s not often a non-All Blacks sponsor gets to use the All Blacks name in a promotion, but this appears to be part of New Zealand Rugby’s recently launched #teamallblacks campaign, which asks Kiwis and global fans to ‘belong’. Alongside Josh Kronfeld, the winners will tour Eden Park the day before the test match on August 15, have dinner with him and watch past Bledisloe matches on the big screen before tucking in for the night. In the morning, they’ll be treated to a kick of the footy on the ground before watching the All Blacks battle it out with the Australians in the evening (maybe the All Blacks get to stay in the box on the night of the game if they win).

The listing will be available for fans to book for free through airbnb.com/allblacks. Entrants will need to submit an answer of 25 words via the ‘Enter to Win’ section, explaining why they’d love to stay at the stadium.

“Such an incredible opportunity to do something no fan has ever experienced in sleeping at Eden Park where so many New Zealand rugby legends have been created,” Kronfeld said. “A sleepover at the grounds the night before a Bledisloe Cup match is a dream come true for any All Blacks fan. Can’t wait to meet the guests and see our boys take on the Wallabies!”

The listing will be available from July 24 and closes on August 8. The guests will be announced on August 10.

Speaking of Airbnb, it recently released a new campaign via TBWA/Chiat/Day, which, like many of its other campaigns, has tried to convince people to experience the world in a different way and reduce the fear many people have of letting strangers into their homes.

The ad asks a question Is Mankind? And it has resulted in a few entertaining parodies like the below from Portal A, which, in an era where attention is currency, is probably seen as a good thing.
