Robot workers deemed unsuitable for new marcomms roles as…

…Fairfax Magazines does the old switcheroo, Foodtown Magazine ups its business game, the NBR welcomes a new adman, OMD starts a family affair and Ideas Shop and Nickelodeon get digital. On the down Lowe

Steve Lowe will take up a new role at Fairfax Magazines this month, managing the specialist portfolio of publications, which includes NZ Fishing News, Boating NZ, NZ Trucking, NZ Fish & Game, NZ Horse & Pony, NZ Lifestyle Block, NZ Autocar and The Cut.

Lowe has an extensive background in the media, communications and entertainment industries and has held senior roles with ACP, NZ Magazines and Gordon & Gotch. Most recently he worked as general manager for DAI Rubicon.

“It’s great to be able to attract Steve back to magazines,” says Lynley Belton, general manager Fairfax Magazines. “He has a strong mix of strategic skills, project leadership experience, strong media knowledge and industry credibility and that makes him an ideal fit for the role.”

Lowe takes over from industry stalwart, Tim Porter, who is moving south to a new role within Fairfax Media as regional manager for the Southland Times based in Wanaka. He will continue to be actively involved with Fairfax Magazines as a publishing consultant, particularly on the marine titles.

“Tim has been an outstanding member of our team for over ten years,” Belton says. “This new arrangement provides a great balance of continuity, knowledge and fresh thinking that works for the business, while giving Tim the opportunity to take up new challenges.”

Lowe commences at Fairfax Magazines on 7 February, while Porter takes up his new post at the Southland Times by mid March.

Food for thought

Foodtown Magazine has appointed Trudy Parsons Smith, the woman behind the launch of NZ House & Garden and NZ Life & Leisure (and occasional real estate agent) to the new role of business development manager. Trish Turney’s role as advertising manager will not be affected.

Like taking Gandy from a baby

Miles Gandy, previously with 3Media, NZ Geographic & Rural News Group, has been named as the deputy advertising manager at the NBR, where his main role will be running national ad sales. He takes over from Wesley Peddie

A family affair

Kasmira Sewpershad has joined OMD Auckland as account manager across the SKY, Schwarzkopf and Fisher & Paykel businesses. Sewpershad has previously held roles at MediaCom New York on Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy and MediaCom Auckland, where she worked on The Warehouse. Her brother Nivin Sewpershad is OMD’s head of technology.

Campaign trail

The Ideas Shop has employed Catherine Wilson as its digital media expert. Her previous role was at 10 Downing St as a member of the digital communications team, where she was responsible for developing the prime minister’s online presence.

Hugh, meet Nick

Hugh Baldwin, previously digital media director, Nickelodeon Australia & MTV Networks Australia & New Zealand, has been appointed to the new role of director of television and content acquisitions for Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand.

Baldwin’s new responsibilities will see him driving Nickelodeon’s programming and content strategies, including the management and planning of intellectual properties, programming acquisitions and development and media planning for television and online. He will also be involved with MTV Networks International on a variety of initiatives, including continuing his work on the International Apps and Digital councils and representation of Nickelodeon Australia on the Nickelodeon International Program Council.

“I believe it’s a timely move for Nickelodeon as a company to bind digital knowledge and experience with the core of our business: television,” Baldwin says. “The world has shifted. Kids access content in a myriad of formats, and they are in control more than ever. Working in digital media necessitates an audience-centred approach, so expanding this mindset to the way we develop and broadcast all our content will be an exciting focus for me in this new role.”

Baldwin has been with Nickelodeon Australia for four years and worked across the MTV Digital portfolio for much of the last two years. He is a board member of Screen Tasmania, and is currently wrapping up his thesis for his PhD Candidacy in Children’s Interactive Digital Television.
