NZ Radio Awards 2017: Duncan Garner, ZM, and The Rock win big

Last night, New Zealand’s radio royalty moved from behind the microphone to Auckland’s Shed 10 to celebrate the best of a platform that shows no sign of slowing down.

And for those who weren’t in attendance, the show was broadcast via a plethora of posts on Snapchat, Twitter and Facebook from the winners looking to share the festivities with their fans who ultimately earned them their win.

Among those celebrating was the biggest winner of the night, Duncan Garner (RadioLive), who picked up Best Talk Presenter – Breakfast or Drive for his role on RadioLive Drive with Duncan Garner.

Garner was a dark horse in the category as the other two finalists, Mike Hosking (Newstalk ZB) and Paul Henry (RadioLive), also battled it out for the accolade last year. It was Henry who came out on top which saw him depart The Paul Henry Show at the end of last year on a high.

The other big winner on the night was ZM, which took out Station of the Year. ZM has gained momentum in the past year with the addition of Cam Mansel’s Snapchart and an increase of 41,000 listeners in the latest GfK Radio Survey to reach an audience of 478,100. That audience growth was across all timeslots.

ZM added the win to its Best Client Digital/Social Promotion Award for ‘Friskies Cat News‘.

Finalist for the Station of the Year Award The Edge won Best Music Breakfast Show for Jay-Jay, Dom and Randell. In their celebratory Facebook post, they credited ratings for the win, with trio tallying 338,000 listeners in the last radio survey.

The other Station of the Year finalist, The Rock, also won big with Jono and Ben’s drive show receiving Best Music Non-Breakfast Team – Network, as well as Best Client Promotion – Network for ‘Cool Town Bro’.

The Rock was also awarded Best Network Station Promotion, Best Station Digital Promotion, Best Community Campaign and Best Video while Rock Workday presenter Jim Cawthorn took to the stage to receive the Best New Broadcaster – On-Air Award.

For the second year in a row, More FM’s Christian Boston was named Best Content Director while Chris Bond was named Best Show Presenter for his work on the station’s Si and Gary Show.

The individual awards added to More FM Canterbury’s Station of the Year – Surveyed Market win.

MediaWorks picked up another individual award for Lloyd Burr, who took to the stage for the Best News Journalist win for his work on RadioLive and Newshub.

All up, MediaWorks won 26 awards and group content director Leon Wratt says it’s a demonstration of it delivering on its goal to create entertaining, compelling and relevant content that connects with New Zealanders everywhere. He also gave a special mention to former MediaWorks CEO Wendy Palmer who received an Outstanding Contribution to Radio Award.

“I could not be more proud of all of our finalists and winners. Their hard work and dedication is second to none, and it’s great to have that publicly recognised. And of course, to see Wendy honoured for her contribution to radio was very fitting – she has been an integral part of our team and we couldn’t have done this without her.”

Meanwhile, NZME was celebrating ZM’s win as well as the award for Best Talk Presenter – Other for Newstalk ZB presenter Marcus Lush and Best Newsreader for Newstalk ZB’s Niva Retimanu.

Radio Sport’s Martin Devlin won Best Sports Reader, Presenter or Commentator, and his station won Best Sports Story – Team Coverage for ‘Remembering Martin Crowe’.

NZME copywriter Chanelle Allen won Best New Broadcaster – Off-Air, and Hauraki and Coast were joint winners for Best Marketing Campaign.

Topping off NZME’s night was The Blackie Award, which went to Radio Hauraki. It celebrates the best radio moment of 2016 and the ‘Scotty J Word Insertion’ by Matt Heath, Jeremy Wells, Joseph Durie and Chris Goodwin was picked to be just that. It saw sports broadcaster Scotty Stevenson given an off-the-cuff phrase to use in his Sky rugby commentary every week.

NZME CEO Michael Boggs says following the company’s digital and print successes at the recent 2017 Canon Media Awards, it’s delighted with the outstanding results it achieved last night.

“The radio industry continues to be highly competitive, ensuring our teams deliver outstanding content to our listeners across both our talk and music brands. I congratulate all the finalists and winners for being recognised amongst the very best in New Zealand.”
