Quora says it has the answer to blogging

WordPress, Blogspot, Tumblr, Squarespace, Medium  - there are a lot of blogging platforms already out there, and now question and answer site Quora wants to join the fray.

Quora has launched a blogging platform which automatically connects authors to readers interested in the topics they write about, which the company says removes the difficulty new writers face when establishing an audience.

Blogging strays away from Quora’s traditional Q+A format, but it’s something co-founder Adam D’Angelo foreshadowed in a blog post earlier this year, and is part of the company’s mission to become an “internet-scale Library of Alexandria”.

I’ve already set up one of these ‘qlogs’, mostly to squat on the name incase the platform gains traction. So far my page just looks sad.

When the blog is set up, users can choose a blog.quora.com URL, and add one of Quora’s 300,000 categories as tags. Blog posts are distributed to followers of the page, as well as followers of the tags.

Quora says engagement with readers in the form of votes and comments will determine how much exposure each post gets, but posts can be promoted by spending credits. Quora credits are earned by answering questions on the site, but some speculate this feature will be monetized in the future.

There are currently no options to customize the look or layout of the blog, apart from a single theme.

Quora hasn’t said if there will be advertising on the blogs in the future, but it will be interesting to see how a revenue share model would work on Quora’s expert-exchange service.

Coinciding with the launch of the blogging platform, is a new iPhone app which works for Quora questions and blogs, and features a rich text editor.
