All about the clicks: Nielsen tracks the year-on-year changes for New Zealand's top ten websites

Nielsen has released its annual list on the top ten websites Kiwis visited over the course of December. And while the list was populated by the usual suspects, there were a few surprises in terms of the year-on-year changes for some of the websites. 

Most notably, YouTube's visitor numbers slipped by 12.1 percent, dropping from 2.05 million in December 2013 to 1.8 million in December 2014.

The data purveyors over at Facebook will undoubtedly see the positive side in this drop, in that the social media juggernaut has been pushing video very hard over the course of the last year, eventually leading to Facebook overtaking YouTube in the US last year in terms of the number of videos watched on desktop computers.

However, it wasn't all good news for Facebook. Zuckerberg's site numbers stagnated, dropping slightly from 2.33 million in 2013 to 2.31 million in 2014. 

Last year's election saw interest in the New Zealand Government website increase by 19.4 percent year on year (1.23 million to 1.46 million), giving the site the biggest percentage-based growth over the period among the top ten. Stuff.co.nz also enjoyed a strong year, increasing its December visitors from 1.36 million in 2013 to 1.59 million last year. These statistics when viewed against Yahoo's 16.5 percent drop (1.73 million to 1.44 million) saw Stuff overtake Yahoo in the overall standings.
