Let’s get quizzical: Heineken RWC promotion set to test nation’s rugby knowledge

The promotional onslaught from Rugby World Cup sponsors hoping to make good on their significant investment into the tournament has begun in earnest, with the dangling carrot of Cup tickets already being used to lure the punters. Heineken is already offering finals tickets with its on-pack promotion and it’s dishing out a few more in the Heineken Trivia Series.

Every week from May to June, “the modern take on the traditional pub quiz” will test the knowledge of New Zealanders in 130 bars around the country in a rugby-oriented quiz show (Sky Sports commentator Scotty Stevenson will be the on-screen quiz master). Four tickets to the Rugby World Cup Final at Eden Park, complete with full Heineken hospitality, return flights to Auckland and accommodation will go to the winning team. So with that prize on the table, organisers will have to keep constant vigil to limit usage of the scourge of the modern pub quiz, the smart phone (even though it states in the rules Googling isn’t allowed).

Each team will amass points over six rounds and the top teams from the upper North Island, lower North Island and South Island, plus the two next best performers based on points earned, will be flown to Auckland for the final on Saturday 6 August.

There is a $100 Heineken bar tab available every week at each participating bar for the winning team, as well as spot prizes of Rugby World Cup 2011 Heineken gear.

Prospective teams of four are encouraged to register as soon as possible to ensure a place in the competition before registrations close on 3 May. The weekly Tuesday night series kicks off at 7pm that day. A full list of participating outlets and locations is available on the Heineken website.
