Hello, is it me you’re looking for…

Lionel Richie is performing in Auckland this week. And in completely unrelated but presumably more important news, one of Healthy Life Media’s main protagonists has sold her shares in the hugely successful company; Waitemata Films has added two more to its flock; and EYE has found its global marketing head honcho.

A toast to good health

The co-founder and director of Healthy Life Media, Kim Mundell, has sold her shareholding in the company to business partner Phil Ryan.

Healthy Food Guide magazine has been a phenomenal success, overtaking many established titles to become New Zealand’s highest-selling food magazine within six years of launch. The masthead has also expanded internationally, with the launch of Australian Healthy Food Guide in 2005 and, after a multi-year effort to have it licensed, UK Healthy Food Guide this month. It also owns the Gluten Free Food & Allergy Shows and TV infomercial Healthy Food Ideas.

Of course, the amount paid for approximately 25 percent of the total shares wasn’t mentioned, but one dashing media raconteur invoked the spirit of Ken Ring and thought the payout could be in the vicinity of $1-2 million (also in the spirit of Ken Ring, that estimate was plus or minus $1-2 million).

“Launching and publishing Healthy Food Guide has been a wonderful experience, and it’s particularly satisfying to hear about the positive impact our brands have made on the health of New Zealanders. I’ve had the privilege of working with a very talented team of people and I wish them well for the future.

“Right now, my priorities have changed and I’m focused on caring for my mother while she undergoes treatment for a serious illness, so I will take some time off to spend with her. Having spent 17 enjoyable years working in magazines and newspapers, my longer term plan is to re-enter the publishing industry in some capacity in the future.”

Ryan says Mundell has made a huge contribution to the brand and to the magazine industry generally.

“We thank her for her dedication and hard work over the past six years. We respect her desire to support her parents and wish her all the best with the future,” he says.

Mundell will stay involved with the business on a part time basis for the next four months to ensure a smooth transition. For any enquires regarding any aspect of the business please contact [email protected] in the first instance. And Mundell can be contacted on [email protected].

Rotondo sets sail… for Waitemata

Award-winning filmmaker Paolo Rotondo and his producer Caroline Biddles have joined Waitemata Films.

Rotondo has had an extensive career on both sides of the camera and is a well-known personality in the NZ Film and Television industry. As well as having acted in several of the country’s most successful films and TV programs, he has also developed a reputation as a noteworthy director. His two NZ Film Commission funded short films were received with great acclaim here and overseas and illustrate his talent for delivering natural performances, sumptuous visuals and concise story telling.

“I’ve done loads of stuff in this industry but all people ever say to me is ‘you look taller on the telly’. So now I’m going to be spending a lot more time behind the camera,” Rotondo says. “I’m really excited about making the move into directing TVCs, I feel right at home with Waitemata Films and I can’t wait to get stuck in”.

Johnny Blick and Mike Oldershaw from Waitemata Films believe he has what it takes to be a great success as a TVC director, but first he needs to stop wearing his ridiculous ‘theatre tights’ to work.

I spy with my little EYE

Out-of-home media company EYE has announced the appointment of Alastair Bannerman to the role of global marketing director.

Bannerman joins EYE from Starcom MediaVest Group (SMG) in the UK, where he has spent the past four years, most recently in the role of chief client officer.

From 2005 to 2007 he worked at Zenith Optimedia Australia as business director leading the Nestlé account, driving the strategic planning and media delivery across their total portfolio of brands. He has also held positions at Carat and MediaVest in the United Kingdom.
