MediaWorks finds inspiration from the grand design of nature for season two of Grand Designs NZ

Grand Designs has launched a new campaign ahead of its premiere of season two this Sunday on TV3, and this time it’s taken inspiration from New Zealand’s great outdoors.

The show airs at 8.30pm this Sunday and is hosted by Kiwi architect Chris Moller and follows the successful UK format, hosted by Kevin McCloud.

In the hero TVC a couple admire different New Zealand attractions for inspiration, including: the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, Te Puia Geyser in Rotorua and the Hobbiton movie set to drive home the point it takes a big idea and sometimes an impossible one to build a Grand Design.

The TV promos for the campaign are being supported by a series of “uniquely Kiwi looking ads” featuring the Big Ideas brought to life: mood lighting in a man cave, grass encompassing a roof line or an explosive geyser as inspiration for a backyard water feature.

The creative for the campaign was again developed in-house by the creative team at MediaWorks.

This year’s houses are ambitious in every aspect and the owners have demonstrated the scale of the big idea required to produce something monumental, the release says.

The audience will also be able to get a deeper understanding of each property via the Grand Designs New Zealand Virtual House Tours which will be available on TV3.co.nz/granddesignsNZ immediately after each episode. The tours allow fans to zoom in and around each property (similar to Google maps) to get an up close view, ideal for capturing inspiration for their own grand design.

Last year’s promo featured Moller looking at a bunch of sites where the Kiwis involved exhibited the classic “she’ll be right” attitude (the TVC has since been removed from YouTube).

“If you’ve ever seen Grand Designs or tried to build one, yeah that long-drop at your bach doesn’t count, you would be familiar with every hurdle there is,” said MediaWorks creative director Ant Farac of the launch of the show last year. “We wanted to emphasis those challenges while celebrating our ‘Kiwi as’, ‘she’ll be right’ ethos. This attitude is an integral part of our DNA and perfectly complemented our Kiwi twist on a grand brand.”

ANZ will again enjoy visibility across season two as the foundation partner. Last year, the bank ran a home loan campaign ahead of the show’s launch, brining to life the idea that every home buyer’s journey is unique through the eyes of the individuals and families involved.

StopPress has been in touch with ANZ to find out more about its activity around the show this year, and will update the story accordingly.
