Good: “That Webby’s going straight to the Treehouse”

AIM Proximity/Colenso BBDO’s Yellow Treehouse is the only New Zealand Webby winner, after it took out the telecommunications trophy. And the Alt Group design boffins must be getting tired of walking up to awards podiums by now. 

The Webby Awards have been going since 1996 and are widely regarded as the internet’s most respected symbol of success, with 650 who’s whos from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences (the most influential of which would have to be Martha Stewart) choosing the winners. A new record was set for the The Webby People’s Awards this year, with close to one million votes cast.

Some small petty comfort can be taken in the fact that it was the same deal across the Tasman: Profero Sydney was the only Aussie agency to pick up a Webby, chosen as the People’s Voice Winner in the interactive advertising, rich media category for its Cyber Bullying campaign.

Adam Good, AIM Proximity’s chief executive says the Yellow Treehouse campaign was a game changing piece of communication, as evidenced by the host of awards, both local and international, that it’s already won.

“To win a Webby award that honors global excellence on the internet is brilliant. It’s the cherry on top to the string of other awards collected in the past year, including Cannes Lion, the Asian Effies, Axis, John Caples, RSVP and the Asia Pacific Digital Media Awards. Congrats all those that were involved at Yellow, Colenso and AIM Proximity. Job Done!”

Last year Alt Group, Xero, Clemenger BBDO, The Hyperfactory, Net Basics and Flight of the Conchords took home trophies.

Speaking of Alt Group, a few more awards have been added to their already bulging trophy cabinet this week.

Two golds were handed to the company at Graphis’ 2011 Poster Annual competition in New York, an international design contest that celebrates the world’s best poster designs, for the company’s Gathering Clouds poster for Auckland contemporary dance company Black Grace and for OUCH, a holey poster created using the sun and magnifying glasses to burn words into paper that was designed to draw attention to the issue of climate change.

OUCH has already won a few international design awards, including a Tokyo Type Directors Club award and New York Type Directors Club TDC56 award. And the Black Grace poster received a few accolades at last year’s national BeST Design Awards.

The Vigneron Centenary Magnum also took home a Design Distinction in the I.D 2010 Annual Design Review, held in New York. It’s regarded as America’s largest and most prestigious juried design competition and Alt Group is in good company: past winners include Apple, Nike and Kodak.
