Golden Apple keeps growing, but Android also makes inroads in Kiwi phone war

Findings from InMobi’s
Mobile Insights Report Q3 show Apple remains the dominant force in the New Zealand market, with
42 percent of total impressions, a nine percent increase from last quarter. But there are also positive signs for Android, climbing five percent to take 34 percent of the total market share.

The data, taken from
the InMobi network in New Zealand (overall it consists of 578 million consumers across 165 countries) from July to September, also showed that RIM’s BlackBerry 9700 has dropped out of the top five handsets since last quarter.

Whereas smartphone penetration remained consistent, tablets and
other connected devices continued an aggressive trajectory with 28 percent of total
device impressions, an 11 percent increase from Q2.

”We are still seeing the effects
of iOS becoming available on all carriers in New Zealand earlier this year,
with Apple growing nine percent of its market share to remain the manufacturer of choice,” says Francisco Cordero, general manager and regional director of InMobi Australia and New Zealand. “This is in contrast to Australia, where we have begun to see signs of
saturation, with Apple losing ground to Android this quarter. As we predicted when this report came out last
quarter, tablets are continuing to dominate the device space, growing in popularity
as smartphones decline. This is surely only set to continue with the long-awaited
launch of the new iPad Mini last week.”
