DraftFCB avoids naffness with needlework

Following on from news about a billboard constructed from broken plates and glasses, DraftFCB has also launched a rather novel billboard for UNICEF. And, in a very impressive display of very time-consuming needlework, it’s made entirely of wool.

The six by three metre installation is 100 percent knitted (no word on where DraftFCB found all the grandmas to do it) and will sit on the corner of Pitt Street and Greys Ave in Auckland in December. It’s part of the ‘Say No to Naff’ campaign for UNICEF, which, like many charities, aims to get Kiwis to purchase gifts from its ‘Inspired Gifts’ range, instead of shelling out for some more cheap crapola.

In addition to the billboard, DraftFCB has placed 10 Eyelites inside various Auckland shopping centres to promote the campaign and intercept shoppers while they go about their Christmas consumerism. One of them even features the actual ‘Say no to Naff’ Christmas jersey.

The knitted efforts are also backed up by press and magazine Xmas Gift Guides, as well as with ads on Facebook, Trade Me, Youtube and Google search.

“This year, we’re asking people to say no to naff gifts that clog up cupboard space, by encouraging people to buy something that will be appreciated by the under-privileged children across the world,” says Dennis McKinlay, UNICEF New Zealand executive director.

UNICEF also guarantees that your gift is sent to a child in need with 100 percent of the purchase price being spent on the gift and distribution. Worldwide, UNICEF sent over 8 million ‘Inspired Gifts’ to 76 countries last year.
