Darby comedy to stream on Netflix

Short Poppies, the Kiwi comedy starring Rhys Darby and David Farrier, made with just over $700,000 in New Zealand on Air funding, will stream exclusively on Netflix in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland from 3 April. The series has yet to screen locally.

New Zealand on Air says this is the first of its funded series to be picked up by a subscription streaming service.

“We think it’s great that content made by and for New Zealanders is also appreciated by international audiences,” says spokesperson Allanah Kalafatelis.

According to TVNZ’s 2014 season website, the series is filmed in the style of a current affairs spoof and sees journalist Farrier meeting seven Kiwi characters in small New Zealand towns. Each character is played by Darby.

Netflix posted a clip from the show on its YouTube channel, saying Short Poppies was coming exclusively to the service from 3 April. The series is made up of eight episodes.

Short Poppies was co-produced by Auckland company Augusto.
