Colenso cleans up at Caples, fights with DDB Group for Campaign Asia Pacific agency of the year honours—UPDATED

Fresh from winning more Caples metal than any other agency in the world over the weekend, Colenso BBDO followed that up by winning Campaign Asia Pacific’s New Zealand creative agency of the year award ahead of DDB Group and DraftFCB, with creative chairman Nick Worthington named as the Australasian region’s best creative director. DDB Group also backed up a good year on the awards front, with Rapp/Tribal winning digital agency of the year ahead of Colenso BBDO and TBWADAN, while Spark PHD was rewarded for an impressive year with the media agency of the year title, ahead of Naked and OMD.

In the Caples, which honour the best direct and interactive marketing campaigns from around the world, Colenso BBDO won four golds, five silvers and four bronze awards, with DB Export, Monteith’s, Pedigree, The V Motion Project and State awarded (see below for full list). That made it the top ranked agency at the awards and it was also the best performance by a New Zealand agency at the Caples Awards to date

“It’s exciting to be working in the current environment which allows us to use creativity to engage an audience directly, and the best work these days usually has a direct aspect to it. The wonderful thing about the Caples is that they are results-driven awards, which demonstrates that great work works,” says Nick Garrett, Colenso BBDO’s managing director. “… We are extremely proud of all that we have achieved in 2012. The team has worked hard to deliver world-class work for our clients, and it’s great to have our efforts acknowledged at these prestigious international awards shows. It’s no surprise to see Nick Worthington being highlighted as Australasia’s leading creative. He is an amazing talent and works tirelessly to deliver incredible creative solutions and business outcomes for our clients. However, the best thing about Wortho is that he’s a good bloke, and the award couldn’t have gone to a nicer guy.”

The 2012 Big Won Report also recognised his creative leadership earlier in the year ranking him the world’s number one creative director.

Sandy Moore, DDB Group New Zealand chief executive says the Campaign Asia Pacific awards also cap a brilliant year for DDB.

“Christmas came early this year,” he says. “The three golds [two for Rapp Tribal and one for Australia/New Zealand creative agency of the year across both the Australian and New Zealand offices]attest that DDB Group NZ is unequivocally leading the pack in the creative industry and our digital arm, Rapp Tribal, is at the helm of digital creativity, both in New Zealand and across Australasia. On the back of being named Most Effective Agency at Effies, as well as holding Agency of the Year titles from NBR, CampaignBrief and Fairfax/AdMedia, it’s clear we’re doing the business for our clients and delivering the results they need.”

“Winning two golds to be named Digital Agency of the Year is an absolutely fantastic result,” says Rob Limb, Rapp Tribal managing director. “We have put in the hard yards this year with some truly visionary work and we’ve continued to invest in digital strategy, social media and technical innovation, so to get this kind of recognition is brilliant. I couldn’t be more proud of my amazing team who has made this happen.

SparkPHD chief executive Louise Bond says “the annual Campaign Asia-Pacific Awards are hugely respected, so we are delighted to win Gold this year.  It’s been a successful year for Spark PHD and winning Media Agency of the Year tops it off perfectly. The entire Spark PHD team has worked incredibly hard over the past 12 months, and this recognition is a testament to the strategic and creative thinking that everyone has delivered throughout the year.  We’re now looking forward to building on this success in 2013.”

Globally, PHD collected seven of the Campaign awards last night, including overall winner for Australia/New Zealand

Eleven PR followed up its win in the Mumbrella Awards to be named PR agency of the year across Australia/New Zealand, and managing partner Kelly Bennett says it is very much a trans-Tasman win.

“We established Eleven PR in New Zealand six years ago, and our Australian office is not even two years old so we’re over the moon about the win,” says Bennett. “Rob Lowe and the team in Sydney have had a phenomenal year, taking out a number of prestigious awards. This is testament to our commitment to deliver collaborative and groundbreaking PR campaigns for our clients. We’ve been working hard to build the Eleven PR brand on both sides of the Tasman and, following the recent establishment of our offer in Singapore, are poised to expand even further into Asia in 2013.”

Kiwi shops didn’t feature in the specialist or independent agencies field.
