Cannes Lions 2013: Day 6

The final Cannes medals were handed out over the weekend, bringing the Dumb Ways to Die-dominated show to an end. But it was slim pickings for the Kiwis, with just one bronze to DDB in the final stages.

Titanium and Integrated

Just 30 campaigns made it through to the shortlist stage of one of the most sought after awards of the festival, with DraftFCB’s ‘Driving Dogs’ the only local effort deemed worthy.

Dove’s ‘Real Beauty Sketches’ by Ogilvy Brasil and McCann’s ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ were both awarded grand prix.

Dumb Ways to Die became the most-awarded campaign in Cannes history, beating Tourism Australia’s ‘Best job in the world’. It won five grand prix, 18 gold, three silver and two bronze.

Film

None of the four Kiwi shortlistings in film—three for DDB for McDonald’s, Instant Kiwi and YWCA and one for Saatchi & Saatchi for Toyota—went any further, with ‘Dumb Ways to Die’ winning another grand prix. It was joined on the grand prix dais by Toshiba/Intel’s ‘The Beauty Inside by Pereira & Odell, which also won a grand prix in the Cyber category.

Film Craft

Three Kiwi shortlistings, with Colenso BBDO getting one for BNZ’s ‘Be Good With Money’ (with Revolver) and DDB getting two for Westpac’s ‘Flatties’ (with Prodigy) and Instant Kiwi ‘Alibi’ (with The Sweet Shop).

Channel 4’s ‘Meet the Superhumans’ won the grand prix.

Branded Content & Entertainment

Five Kiwi shortlistings, but just one winner, with DDB/Rapp Tribal’s Secret Fishing Spots for Hutchwilco taking another bronze in best use or integration of digital or social media.

Colenso BBDO had three in the running, two for the V Motion Project and one for Amnesty International’s ‘Trial by Timeline’, and DraftFCB had one for ‘Driving Dogs’.

Grand Prix for Good:
Three shortlistings for New Zealand agencies (DraftFCB had two, one for Driving Dogs and, strangely, one for Prime TV’s ‘Call Girl’, and Colenso had the other for Trial by Timeline).

BBDO Dusseldorf took the grand prix for WWF’s ‘The Ant Rally’.
