BP tackles young love as it moves on from Peter and the rabbit

Much like BP’s last spot featuring an adorable missing bunny, BP has once again tried to pull on the heartstrings, with its latest campaign dubbed ‘My BP Story’ via Ogilvy & Mather. This time the spot tells the story of a boy who wants a girl to notice him.

In the spot the young protagonist, Tom, is at a BP with his grandfather when he spots Ginny, the girl of his dreams, and remarks that she’ll never notice him.

His inventive grandfather then comes up with an elaborate plan to get the attention of the girl by building a glider plane and attaching it to a tractor. The boy and his granddad take off and fly above Ginny’s home.

We’ve got to say, it reminds us a little of the boy in Love Actually who is similarly trying to get the attention of a popular girl.

A BP release says the spot is part of an approach to put everyday people at the centre of its campaigns: “A captivating tale of Kiwi ingenuity and the offerings of a typical BP, is a natural continuation of the strategy grounded in sharing people’s stories, the ones that happen out there on our Kiwi roads, with BP at the centre, the stage for these tales to take place.”

BP national marketing manager Leigh Taylor says BP is proud to deliver the next iteration of ‘My BP Story’.

“[It’s] a platform that allows us to creatively showcase the role BP plays in the journeys of New Zealanders, from the everyday to the epic adventures.”

Ogilvy senior writer Richard Loseby says: “It’s not often an agency gets to create such a large-scale cinematic commercial, then collaborate with some extremely talented filmmakers and actors in order to make it happen, but we’ve been lucky enough to do that twice now, in as many years.”

BP’s previous spot featured a motorcyclist going to extreme measures to reunite a bunny with its owner.
