Best Awards finalists: Strategy, Alt Group, Special Group and Sons & Co lead the charge—UPDATED

The gargantuan list of finalists for this year’s edition of the Best Awards has been announced, and it reads like a veritable encyclopedia of the finest design work released over the last year.

Alt Group shares the top spot with 15 nominations for projects developed for Lumojo, Fisher & Paykel, Auckland Council, Silo Theatre, Tennent Brown, The Pantograph Punch and Warren & Mahoney.

Also pulling in 15 nominations, Strategy Design & Advertising picked up its tally for work developed for TedX Wellington, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, New Horizons for Women’s Trust and an internal campaign.

Next on the list was Special Group with a haul of 14 nominations, six of which came for the Molenberg Sandwich Shop campaign.

“The great thing about Molenberg Sandwich Shop’s finalists is that they are over such a wide range of tough categories: Packaging, Brand identity, Environmental graphics, Use of colour, Hospitality and Communication,” says Special Group creative partner Tony Bradbourne.

“We are very happy for the great team at Goodman Fielder. And I guess it is a clear demonstration of the strength of Special – that we are equally strong in comms as we are in design as we are in digital as we are in retail.”

Not far behind is Sons & Co, which landed a total of 13 nominations for its clients Garbett, Tennent Brown Architects, Enjoy Public Gallery, The Practical Man, Crane Brothers, AUT, Athfield Architects, Govett Brewster, Christchurch City Council, Velvet, Ashton Wheelans, Stemme and Coca.

Another agency to reach double digits was Creature, which landed eight finalists spots as well as two Lux Festival (Design Communication and Public Good Design).*

Gladeye also put in a strong showing with seven finalist slots, mostly for its innovative web design.

The wait is now on for the big night on 14 October when the winners will be announced.

*Correction: This story previously incorrectly stated that Creature was the only other agency to reach double digits. Studio South also accomplished this impressive feat, landing 11 finalist spots.
