AUT invests $5 million to construct waterfront theatre in Auckland

AUT University has announced it's investing $5 million into building on the Auckland waterfront.

The Waterfront Theatre Project, which is a partnership between the university and the Auckland Theatre Company (ATC), will see the construction of the new performance centre in trendy Wynyard Quarter– specifically amongst the Innovation Precinct planned to go up in a previously a marine industrial area.

The 600-seat theatre is designed for drama and dance, with access to an adjacent 200-seat auditorium inside of the ASB Bank headquarter's being completed next door. It will act as the new home for ATC.

AUT's investment grants it 15 percent of the new companying established to maintain and operate the theatre. Vice chancellor Derek McCormac says it opens up opportunities for performing art students at the uni.

"The new theatre will be a centre for cultural development and expression in New Zealand and AUT is thrilled to be part of bringing that to Auckland. The initiative is an investment in our community, and a relationship that will benefit students, the artists and wider society", he says.
