Aussie daily deal website sets up shop in New Zealand

There are already plenty of daily deal websites operating in New Zealand, but popular Australian shopping site Catch of the Day thinks there’s still room in the market for another one and will start offering its cheap wares to insatiable online shopping Kiwis on 1 February.

With over 360,000 followers in Australia, Melbourne-based CatchOfTheDay (COTD), which lists a new product at midday each day for 24 hours, or until it sells out, is one of the country’s most visited online shopping sites (according to Hitwise it accounted for one percent of all online shopping in Australia and recorded $32 million in revenue in 2008-09) and offers “a dandy mix of tomfoolery and sparkling sensational deals”.

The 35-strong team behind the website has has had previous success with Infomercial TV sales in Australia, as well as retail experience in the electronics industry.

COTD spokesperson and operations manager Gabby Leibovich told Smart Company: “New Zealand is four hours away from Melbourne, and Perth is six hours away. There are about four million people there so it’s equal to another state such as New South Wales. I believe this will enable us to grow by 20 percent very quickly. We’ve been keeping an eye on the New Zealand market, and they definitely like to shop online. It is quite remote, and for that reason I believe New Zealanders aren’t getting the same sort of value we can have in Australia.”
