All Good’s banana-based charity starts at home

Youtube VideoFairtrade schemes typically aim to help end child labour, address child poverty and give producers in developing nations a fair shot at a good life. All Good Bananas has been doing just that by helping kids in the El Guabo cooperative in Ecuador, but it decided it was time to try and help out some of the local young’uns in need by giving away 5,000 bunches (25,000) bananas this year.

Following on from the recent news that Fonterra would be trialling the free milk scheme in Northland schools, All Good Bananas, which won the sustainable marketing category at last year’s TVNZ-NZ Marketing Awards and is the only importer of Fairtrade bananas in New Zealand, recently teamed up with KidsCan for the Give a Bunch campaign and is asking the public to pledge bananas to kids via its Facebook page. These bananas will be distributed to selected KidsCan partner schools.

“We’re helping to support 900 children of banana farmers and workers in Ecuador through the Fairtrade system,” says All Good director Simon Coley. “But then we had a look in our own backyard. Thousands of children are living in poverty in New Zealand and many of them turn up to school hungry. We wanted to help do something about it. When people pledge their support via our Facebook page, they will be helping some the country’s most vulnerable kids to get a year’s worth of weekly deliveries of fresh bananas. It’s just something small that we can do to help these kids out.”

KidsCan general manager of marketing and fundraising, Jan Clark, says bananas are a nutritional complement to its existing food programme in selected schools. And, as many of the children it helps do not have a lot of fresh fruit in their diets, she says the bananas will give them a great energy boost.

The campaign kicks off in March 2012 and will run throughout the year.
