Al Jazeera English comes to NZ

Kiwi viewers can now tune in to the Al Jazeera English news channel on Sky and will be able to see it on Freeview from 1 November.

According to a recent statement, the channel will reach around two million New Zealanders on Sky channel 90 and Freeview channel 16, broadcasting live and free to air.

It’s already broadcast in more than 130 countries.

“We’re incredibly pleased to be making these breakthroughs in New Zealand, and look forward to offering to viewers our in-depth global journalism, marked with integrity,” Al Jazeera English’s managing director Al Anstey said.

“The world is a village, and what happens on the other side of the planet has an effect on us, whether that be on the climate, economy or war. With our global reach, we aim to continually cover stories that are about the big issues, but crucially also about real people.”

Among the Kiwi Al Jazeera journalists are former TVNZ reporter Wayne Hay, who was recently released from captivity after being detained by authorities in Egypt.Other Kiwis working for Al Jazeera are Tania Page in Johannesburg, Tarek Bazley and anchors Kamahl Santamaria and Elizabeth Puranam.
