2degrees account up for pitch

2degrees has confirmed that its creative account is currently up for pitch and that it will be working through this process with a number of agencies.

The account has been on the books for Special Group since 2013 when the indie agency won a pitch against a number of other agencies.

From the telco’s launch date in 2009 to 2013, the creative account was held by TBWA.

2degrees and Special Group have had quite a fruitful creative partnership until now, as evidenced by the success of the ‘Play the Bridge‘ campaign, which picked up a host of local and international awards.

Telcos don’t change hands all that often, and a number of high profile agencies across the industry will be salivating at the opportunity to get a piece of the business.

It’s unclear at this stage which agencies have thrown their hats into the ring, but DDB, Assignment Group, Barnes Catmur & Friends Dentsu and Saatchi & Saatchi are likely to be among those interested in the business. Whether this interest manifests in official participation in the pitch process is yet to be seen.

Special Group managing partner Michael Redwood confirmed that his agency had been asked by 2degrees to take part in the process, but he wouldn’t make any additional comments.

The decision by 2degrees to open a pitching process follows on from this year’s appointment of Roy Ong to the position of chief marketing officer, after the departure of Malcolm Phillipps, who had been with the company from 2009.

It also follows on from news in May that indie agency Run had won the employer brand business.

This move comes on the eve of an enormous change in the telco market, with Vodafone in talks with Sky over a potential merger, set to take place by the end of the year.
