If our office is any guide, there are plenty of bleary-eyed, slow-moving, grease-craving media folk today following the mid-winter Christmas party that is the Magazine Awards last night at the Pullman. And, after 56 awards across 14 categories were handed out, it was a night for the ruggers to celebrate, with Tangible Media’s NZ Rugby World taking home the top two awards of the night, supreme editor of the year for Gregor Paul and supreme magazine of the year.
The judges said: “This is a totally professional package … strong well-designed covers, excellent mix of analysis, profiles and short features, strong use of action photographs in the design; it communicates excellence and credibility with strong, opinionated columnists, and a good ‘blokey’ laconic tone. Perfectly pitched to the readership.”
Julie Dalzell was handed the Lifetime Achievement award, which is given at the discretion of the MPA Board to recognise an outstanding contribution to the magazine publishing industry. Previous recipients have been Robin Beckett, Warwick Roger, Reg Birchfield, Jean Wishart, Lindsey Dawson and Paula Ryan.
Dalzell was the launch editor of Cuisine in 1986, purchased the magazine in 1988. She went on to launch Cuisine in Australia (1995). She the magazine until 2002, and finally sold it in 2003. Cuisine picked up four awards this year, including best magazine and best cover design in the food category.
Fairfax took out the publishers’ title with 19 awards, followed by Tangible Media, which brought home its biggest ever haul with 15 awards. NZ Magazines won nine and ACP Magazines didn’t enter.
Other highlights of the night included NZ Fishing World’s Geoff Thomas refusing to eat the main course of fish because he doesn’t eat it unless he’s caught it, killed it and cooked it himself.
