In the last instalment of When Someone Goes Somewhere Else for 2011, Nikki McKelvie shifts from Ogilvy to DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi's Simon Wedde heads up the road to Ogilvy, Droga5 names Jason Clapperton as its planning director and Designworks adds four more to the coterie.

Deathstar bound

DDB has snaffled Ogilvy's client service director Nikki McKelvie as group business director, leading the Warehouse and SKY accounts at DDB.

McKelvie joined Ogilvy as a group account director in 2006, was promoted to business director in 2007 and then client service director in 2009. She has also worked at Saatchi & Saatchi and M&C Saatchi and has worked on accounts like TVNZ, Coca-Cola, L&P, Powerade, Fairfax, BP, Sanitarium and Kiwibank.

“I’ve known Nikki for the last ten years and watched as she’s grown into one of only a few proper, mature and experienced account leaders in our industry," says DDB managing director Justin Mowday. "She brings with her a wealth of both brand and retail experience, and has the right balance of bold smarts and pragmatism that we need to make our clients successful. Nikki’s track record and stash of awards speaks for itself, which is just as well because Nikki’s too humble to ever tell you about them herself."

McKelvie has won a plethora of Gold Awards for Lemon & Paeroa at Axis and AWARD, the Grande Orca for L&P 2006/07 and People’s Choice Award and was selected as the NZ representative at the Ogilvy Asia Pacific conference AdChamps, Sri Lanka 2008.

Wedded bliss

While one senior staffer departs Ogilvy, another one enters, with Saatchi & Saatchi's Simon Wedde heading up the Strand to take on a senior role from February.

The former managing director of DDB moved to Saatchis in May last year and led the Telecom business.

As Saatchi & Saatchi's Nicola Bell said after his appointment was announced: “Simon knows the New Zealand market inside-out. He’s highly experienced in business transformation, customer engagement, and in driving award-winning creative and sales results."

Happy Clapperton

Droga5 has appointed Jason Clapperton, a New Zealander who went to Elam Art school, set up a clothing business selling men's underwear, worked at WRC/Mango in New Zealand and DraftFCB in Melbourne as planning director and was one of three directors alongside Andy Mitchell and Friday O'Flaherty who set up indie agency Running With Scissors.

"I've enjoyed the discussions with Jason," says Andrew Stone, business partner at Droga5 NZ. "I like his strategic, analytical business thinking and his passion for the role of creativity in building brands and businesses. He's also an entrepreneur at heart, which fits with our culture. I'm sure he will add a lot to our journey of producing radical ideas."

Designworks' latest recruitment drive has seen its ranks swell by four, with Mark Bensemen joining the company’s Auckland branch as a design leader while Bridget Taylor has been appointed spatial designer. And in the firm’s Wellington office, Anais Ardid is the new design strategist and Frank MacFarlane is a senior digital producer – interactive.

“Designworks has pushed hard this year to grow its expert skill base across the full range of design disciplines,” says chief executive Sven Baker. “This reflects our commitment to offering an innovative and strategically focused full-service package that encompasses brand strategy and design right through to interactive and retail environments.”

Bensemen has more than 20 years’ experience in branding and design throughout Australasia, including working on major projects such as development of a wide range of export brands through NZ Trade & Enterprise’s Better By Design programme.

Taylor brings extensive experience in retail and design projects ranging from large retail roll-outs to small boutique stores.

With a degree from Central Saint Martins in London, Ardid has taught master classes in design research at the Institute of European Design along with working at major design agencies. Her most recent role at Fiche Consulting involved exploring the future of tax and technology for the IRD.

MacFarlane comes to Designworks fresh from five years at VFX Weta Digital where he managed complex international projects such as feature films Planet of the Apes and soon to be released Tintin.

Air New Zealand claims September Ad Impact award

It was a busy September with a range of brands releasing new spots in the lead up to the warmer months of the year. There could, however, only be one Colmar Brunton Ad Impact winner, and this time we saw a repeat winner step up to the podium.
