Sup Cuz

As we mentioned on Friday, ANZ’s new media agency SparkPHD is currently on the hunt for a strategic planning director after Naked Communications signed up Guy Cousins, Campaign Asia-Pacific’s Australasian Media Planner of the Year, as managing partner.

“Luring Guy across to Naked has been an ambition of ours for some time, so we’re stoked to make it a reality,” says Matt O’Sullivan, director of Naked NZ. “He’s one of the best in the business. This sets us up for a strong 2012, working with foundation clients like Coca-cola and Fonterra, as well as a couple of new ones”.

Cousins says he’s a long standing fan of Naked and says the senior team has a very clear vision of where the agency is going.

“I have a huge amount of respect for what they have achieved in such a short period of time. So this is an opportunity that I absolutely want to be a part of.”

Phil Hayden, chief executive of Naked Asia Pacific, which has offices in Auckland, Sydney, Melbourne, Singapore, Tokyo and Mumbai, says the appointment signals a change in pace for Naked as it ramps up growth across Asia Pacific.

“We want to build a collection of the top talent in the business and we’re really happy people are keen to join us,” he says.

From the Inside up

Yahoo! New Zealand has boosted its sales team with two new internal appointments after Sarah Fenton and Johanna Cotter, who both have 11 years industry expertise, have taken up roles as group sales managers.

“With the experience that this duo bring to the team we are well placed to deliver exceptional levels of service to our agency partners and customers,” Yahoo! New Zealand sales director Louis Niven

Fenton, formerly Yahoo! New Zealand’s senior account manager, has worked with AOL UK and London’s Financial Times. Cotter, also previously a senior account manager with the company, has extensive media publishing experience and strong relationships at key media agencies.

From five-star to financial services

After nearly four years as marketing communications manager at The Langham, Rachel Broadmore has resigned from her role to take up the position of group communications manager at HSBC bank in Auckland from 29 February. She takes over from Dee Crooks, who is off on maternity leave, and she will be passing the Langham’s pink sash to Lucy Thorpe.

Patents are a virtue

Ian Finch, managing partner of James & Wells Intellectual Property, has been appointed as president of the New Zealand Institute of Patent Attorneys.

He is a supervising partner of James & Wells Intellectual Property’s Auckland patents team and national litigation team, and was recently named in Intellectual Asset Management magazine’s IAM Patent 1000: The World’s Patent Practitioners.

Zabel tolls

Margaret Zabel will assume the role of chief executive of The Communications Council in Australia. She has been acting chief executive since November 2011, during which time she has stewarded member projects such as the development of the Commercial Producers Council and the organisation of the Circus festival, as well as meeting with members, industry contacts and other stakeholders to gauge areas of interest and development for the organisation.

“We’re very pleased to announce Margaret’s appointment,” says Communications Council chairman Anthony Freedman. “Margaret has shown an exceptional commitment to the organisation so far and brings fresh thinking for the future as well as a ‘client perspective’ on many aspects of our work. This will be essential in helping to deliver initiatives that effectively illustrate the contribution our industry makes to the economy, culture and society.”

“Excellence and effectiveness in creativity, and foresightful leadership are close to my heart as well as at the heart of the Council and this industry,” she says. “In the context of a changing communications landscape, economic uncertainty and an ongoing interest in our industry from media and government, it is a very important time to galvanise our community behind common causes.”

In the immediate term she will be focusing on enhancing membership value through the development of best practice projects in the areas of agency search and pitching, the relaunch of the Accreditation program and the AdSchool brand, and the delivering and development of Circus and the Effies, while exploring ways to lift the industry’s reputation with clients and the broader community.

She has over 20 years of professional experience including strategic and financial planning, sales, marketing and consulting and prior to her role at The Communciations Council, she was the national marketing director of Lion Nathan Australia. Under her leadership, Lion Nathan received a broad range of local and international awards for effectiveness and creativity.

She has worked extensively at senior levels with companies, including Frito-Lay Australia (Pepsico), IBM, Gulf Oil and PetroCanada Oil. She was most recently acting CEO for not for profit ‘R U OK?’ and continues as a board director.

To the other side
